Dealing With Various Speech Impediments

By Tameka Ware

Communication, no matter how crude or advanced it may be, is a very important thing for us human beings. That is why for those who are suffering from speech impediments, life can be quite challenging. Nevertheless, they can now avail of a variety of treatments and therapies to make improvements in their lives.

Studies show that only about a tenth of all the people are born without any difficulties in speaking. To some degree, others may have conditions that do not necessarily interfere with their normal lives. It is a must for you to learn what conditions people could possibly suffer from to help either yourself or others.

One of the basic problems that some people may have when it comes to speaking is stuttering. We all know what this is all about. A phenomenon called cluttering may be likened to stuttering too since it affects the efficacy of a person to deliver his or her message to the listener. It is often regarded as a fluency disorder that causes the person to use wrong grammar and sometimes even speak too fast, resulting in an incoherent piece.

Dysprosody is another thing to be wary about. It is the person's inability to fix his speaking intensity, intonation, utterance segment timing and rhythm. There are certain medical conditions associated with the occurrence of this condition. Some attribute it to brain trauma, brain tumor and cerebrovascular accidents.

Speech sound disorders, on the other hand, affect the person's ability to articulate sounds. The cause is somehow physical. It can be linked to voice disorders in which problems with a person's vocal chords or voice producing organs are detected. Of course, these hinder the production of effective speech.

It is a must for people to have a good set of speaking structures to avoid certain symptoms that affect communication. These may include gliding, fronting and lisping. There are also certain conditions to the nerves that affect the structures that control speech. This condition is called dysarthria which can be secondary to other diseases such as Parkinson's disease and cerebral palsy.

Although speech impediments are not considered language disorders, they can be developmental in nature too. Apraxia is an example condition for this. This causes the person to rearrange letters, words or sentences; thereby affecting his or her ability to communicate. Those who are mute, on the other hand, are completely incapable of speaking.

For someone who has any of the conditions stated above, it is best to get therapy or treatment as soon as possible. The treatment to be rendered will depend on the cause. That is why adequate diagnostics should be performed. People qualified to render treatments include speech therapists, phoniatric doctors and psychotherapists.

Speech impediments can really affect our lives in small or great ways. We are just so lucky that with technology and knowledge discovered, various treatments have already been invented for people. People just need to know what they have to do to get the remedy that they deserve. There are many experts available, willing to offer them the assistance they need.
