Redskins HC Jay Gruden wishes he had called more running plays in Week 1 Posted: 10 Sep 2014 08:18 PM PDT The Redskins scored six points in their season-opening loss to the Texans. The score was within one possession of separation for 58 minutes, and Washington scored its only touchdown on a four-play drive that looked like this: Run. Run. Run. Run. However, Alfred Morris carried the ball only 14 times, and the Redskins attempted passes on 70 percent of their plays in the second half. For Redskins fans out there wondering why their team didn't try to pound the rock a little more, perhaps you can take solace in the fact that first-year head coach Jay Gruden probably asked himself the same question Sunday night. He indicated Monday that he regrets not keeping it on the ground more often in Houston. quot;If I had to do it all over again Sunday, I probably would have run the ball more than I did," Gruden said. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Sixteen of the Redskins' final 19 plays were passes despite the fact that they were trailing by only eight points for the majority of this time. And Morris had averaged more than 6 yards per carry. Gruden's oversight can be chalked up as first-game jitters from a coach who really likes to throw the ball. But part of me feels like this will become a trend. We're talking about an offensive coach who called for 586 throws from Andy Dalton last year. Chucking it downfield is what Gruden likes to see, and now that he's (ahem) running his own on-field product, you can bet he'll conduct the type of offense he wants. That's not to say we won't see a short-term change in philosophy. With that "wish" comment on the record, Morris should see a significant increase of work against the Jaguars this Sunday. He is a strong RB2 this week. But I expect Redskins fans and media will be griping about an unbalanced offense later on in the year. Now, as long as Gruden was dialing up a bevy of passes, can we talk about why he did not once call for any passes to DeSean Jackson at least 20 yards down the field?
Browns TE Jordan Cameron day-to-day with sprained shoulder, MRI shows no structural damage Posted: 10 Sep 2014 07:30 PM PDT Browns tight end Jordan Cameron declared Wednesday that he is quot;all good" after an MRI on his sprained right shoulder showed no structural damage. "Right now, it's just a day-by-day thing," Cameron said via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Just seeing how it feels when I wake up, and we'll go from there.'' Cameron's injury, which he suffered early in the third quarter of Sunday's loss to the Steelers, is an aggravation of a preseason injury. He sprained the AC joint in the same shoulder Aug. 2. However, Cameron brushed aside any thoughts that it could become a chronic issue, saying that it was "kind of an unlucky deal." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Cameron amassed 47 yards and saw five targets in a little more than two quarters, so it's clear that he still has Brian Hoyer's eye. If he can go Sunday, he'll face a Saints defense that allowed Falcons TE Levine Toilolo into the end zone. More will be known about Cameron's playing odds Friday.
Bears WRs Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery sit out Wednesday's practice Posted: 10 Sep 2014 07:07 PM PDT Here is the stuff of Jay Cutler's nightmares: The Bears without Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. That's how it was during Wednesday's practice as both players nursed injuries sustained in Week 1 Marshall has an ailing ankle that forced him to miss a handful of plays during the Bears' overtime loss to the Bills. Jeffery missed most of the second half due to a hamstring injury. However, there doesn't appear to be much worrying going on, at least in public. Marshall said Tuesday that he is quot;fine," and Jeffery's injury was downplayed by head coach Marc Trestman after the game. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Marshall was very fortunate to not suffer a truly serious injury as his ankle got trapped underneath a Bills defender during a tackle, forcing his body to contort awkwardly. But at least he finished the game in between a few abrupt, short exits. Jeffery didn't play at all in the fourth quarter, and I'm assuming his status is a little murkier since hamstring injuries can be very fickle and delicate. Fantasy owners should hope they can get on the practice field by Friday at the latest. Until then, we wait. If both players are unable to play Sunday night against the 49ers, tight end Martellus Bennett would likely be Cutler's top target. He caught eight passes on 10 targets for 70 yards and a score.
Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew has 'procedure' on right hand, Week 2 status unclear Posted: 10 Sep 2014 06:45 PM PDT According to Fallon Smith of CSN Bay Area, Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew suffered an injury to his right hand during Sunday's loss to the Jets and underwent a procedure to fix the issue Monday. Head coach Dennis Allen confirmed that Jones-Drew had something done on the hand and said he is day-to-day. A source told Smith that the veteran quot;is not expected to miss much time, if any." FANTASY ANALYSIS: However, the exact nature of MJD's injury is unknown. We'll pass along more updates during the week, but Darren McFadden's chances of starting against the Texans appear to be rising. Both he and MJD struggled against the Jets, combining for just 26 yards on 13 yards. Astute owners in deeper leagues should put 23-year-old back Latavius Murray on their watch list. The second-year pro has size and speed and currently resides third on the Raiders' RB depth chart. With MJD looking sluggish and possibly inactive this weekend, and with McFadden always a strong gust of wind away from breaking, Murray could see substantial work sooner than later.

Robert Griffin III says Redskins TE Jordan Reed will miss Week 2 Posted: 10 Sep 2014 11:32 AM PDT Associated Press reporter Mark Long has a quote from Robert Griffin III saying Washington will be without TE Jordan Reed for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Reed hurt his hamstring in Week 1 while trying to hurdle a defender. He is considered week-to-week. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's not a major blow to the Redskins, who are facing a vanilla Jacksonville Jaguars defense and will have plenty of opportunities to score without Reed. But it's a big blow to fantasy owners. Not only did Reed put up a dud for owners last week, he'll now miss one of his best matchups of the season. He is a strong hold but has to be monitored as he is becoming injury-prone. Washington tight ends Logan Paulsen and Niles Paul will fill in the gap in Reed's absence.

Bengals TE Tyler Eifert out until at least Week 10 Posted: 10 Sep 2014 10:11 AM PDT Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert suffered a gruesome dislocated elbow injury in first half of Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Bengals have decided to place him on short-term injured reserve, meaning he won't be back until at least Week 10. ESPN's Coley Harvey has the full details. quot;NFL teams are allowed to use the IR designation in just one case each season. Under the guidelines of the rule, Eifert won't be eligible to practice for six weeks and can't return to game action for eight weeks after he is officially put on short-term IR." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Eifert can be dropped in redraft formats as there should be better options on your waiver wire. Even after he returns, he'll still be limited and splitting targets with Jermaine Gresham. Eifert is still a hold in dynasty formats. You can also give a slight bump to Gresham for this season.
