NFL makes Browns WR Josh Gordon's indefinite suspension official

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 08:36 PM PST

What was assumed to be official last week is now officially official: Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon won't be playing in the NFL until at least 2016. quot;Josh Gordon of the Cleveland Browns has been suspended without pay for at least one year for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Gordon's suspension begins immediately," the league's official statement read Tuesday. Gordon tested positive for alcohol on Jan. 2. This is his third suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy since June 2013. FANTASY ANALYSIS: I guess Gordon decided not to appeal this latest ban, something he hinted at last week in his open letter. Don't pencil him in for 2016 either. It sounds like the Browns will stand by Gordon, but the NFL may not be so forgiving. Remember when Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon was suspended indefinitely in October 2013? We're still trying to figure out when he can file for reinstatement. So what do the Browns have on offense without the immensely talented 23-year-old? Well, it's fairly bleak right now. The good news is 2014 rookies Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West make up a serviceable backfield duo behind a good offensive line. But this team doesn't have a quarterback right now. Johnny Manziel, aside from his difficulties on the field, is currently in a rehab facility, and Brian Hoyer will become a free agent next month. Whoever does line up under center for this team may look most often in the direction of two short, small, speedy receivers: Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Gabriel. Miles Austin is OK as a possession receiver, but he'll turn 31 in June and has a well-known history of hamstring injuries. Travis Benjamin caught 18 passes this season, and the roster's four other wideouts combined for a grand total of zero catches. Tight end Jordan Cameron would provide a needed dose of size, athleticism and youth in a single package to this passing game, but the Browns aren't expected to re-sign him when he hits the open market in March. The tight ends behind him on the depth chart, Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray, are more blocker than pass-catcher. The Browns do have a lot of cap room, so you have to assume they will make wide receiver a priority this spring -- and there should be a good crop of productive wideouts to choose from. But to think any of them will simply come in and replace Gordon's impact and production is crazy. Cleveland will miss him.
