Learning Web Design As A Side Job

By Casey Wood

It's vital a web designer learn all the basics of web design, so they create websites that are both good looking and functional. Many sources are out there to give the novice designera a place to start -- and this is one of those sources. You'll find some advice below to boost your web design quality.

If you are just starting out in web design, use a simple template for your layout, then modify it with your own code. You want to start out basic and then get advanced later on when you become better and more familiar with the whole web design process.

Avoid using captchas except during user registration. Being forced to use a Captcha frustrates users, as they simply want to use the website. Captchas are especially frustrating for website users with visual and hearing difficulties. Most visitors will leave a webpage that requires too much personal information or the completion of difficult tasks.

Hosting your own website might not be a good choice. Design your website as much as you can by yourself, but have someone else host it, so that you do not have to worry about its security and safety.

If your site contains a corporate logo, ensure that clicking it takes visitors back to the home page. Over time, most people have started to expect to find a clickable logo that takes them to your main web page. It's frustrating to click on a logo and have nothing happen, and this saves you from adding a 'home' link. Your site is much easier to use if your logo is clickable.

So you just launched your website and you think the designing process is done, right? Think again. Be prepared to keep busy with your site. It will not be necessary to continually make updates, but you should do so fairly regularly. If your website focuses on current events, frequent updates are an absolute must. Current is the key word here! Luckily, keeping website current isn't as overwhelming as tending to a blog. You will have to work differently to keep it current, but you'll get the hang of it.

Free design software is a valuable tool for quickly setting up a website. It is not necessary to spend a large amount of money on web designing software with the number of quality, free programs available. A simple search is easy to do, and it produces a way for you to determine which free software and tools are best suited to your needs.

Since many of the great domain names are already taken and in use by other companies, it might be in your interest to check out auction sites for used domain names like Sedo. These sites offer access to dozens of domain names, including those that were abandoned or sold.

When it comes to figuring out a design for your website, there are many things you must consider. While website design can feel daunting to some people because of many different factors that go into building it, this should not mean the project has to be hard. Use the tips laid out here, and you are going to be better equipped to design an attractive, successful site.
