Improve Your Business Security with Access Control

By Mark Mahaffey

If you own a business and use keys to access your building, one of the best security measures that you can take is to not tag your keys with individual information. When you label each individual key with the address and door that it opens, you are making your business vulnerable to break-ins.

If you happen to lose your keys, and they fall into the wrong hands, the identifying information on the keys will lead a burglar straight to your place of business. He might find your keys and burglarize your store before you get a chance to have the locks changed.

A better idea is to leave the keys unlabeled. Even though this means that an honest person who finds them will not be able to return them to you, it is worth the inconvenience of having to replace all the keys. Replacing keys is much easier than dealing with a burglary in your store.

However, keys and locks are not the best way to control access to your building. It is very easily to get copies of keys made, and this creates a security loophole in your business. And each time you have employee turnover, you have to get the locks rekeyed. This can be very expensive.

You do have other options which remove the security flaws of simple locks and keys. Sophisticated access control security systems are available for the smallest business up to the largest corporation, giving you control over not only who goes where in your facility, but also when.

How does it work? Each employee is given a card or a key fob which functions as his or her key to your facility. If they lose the card or fob, all you have to do is reprogram the computer so that it rejects it in the future. And you no longer have to rekey locks when an employee leaves!
