2012/2013 Buying Guide Of The Blue-ray

By Cecilie Blaber

Blu-ray refers to an optical disk format that got developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association. It has greatly been replacing the use of DVDs and its development was to facilitate recording, playing back and rewriting of high definition videos. In terms of storage, it is five times as large as ordinary DVDs. The traditional DVDs have a 25GB capacity for single layer discs and up to 50 GB for discs with dual layers.

It may be somehow useless owning an HDTV without having a Blue-ray player. Its capabilities are fully harnessed with the connection of HDMI cable whose pricing has greatly reduced. It goes for below $100.

Factors To Consider Prior To Buying

1. Connectivity to the internet

2. Home networking ability

3. Ability to work in 3D

4.Up-scaling

5. Compatibility

6. Blu-ray recording

Internet connectivity

The majority of the players come with ability to connect to the internet. This is done through Ethernet ports or Wi-Fi systems, with Wi-Fi preferred for its convenience. The big manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony and Panasonic give their own internet features. One of the best experiences online is offered by Internet@TV by Samsung. With it, there is access to a wide range of music, videos as well as social networking sites.

Home Networking capability

Most Blu-ray players now allow you to create a home network for sharing files from your computer. But first, check the file formats a Blu-ray player supports before deciding to use this function. Some of the formats you'll be able to play are MP3, HD, DivX, DivX HD, MKV, JPEG, JPEG HD and AVCHD.

3D capabilities

There are many 3D capable players in the market. The extra dimensional experience is however only enjoyed through acquisition of 3D capable TVs. Sony has a wide range of 3D capable players. For those with PS3s, 3D capability is achieved through updating them with their firmware.

Up-scaling

Old DVD collections are able to be up-scaled using Blu-ray players. DVD collections designed for viewing lower quality 576i resolution on CRT screens are able to get upgraded to 720p or 1080i 1080p resolutions. Image quality is enhanced through addition of details to the upscale source.

Ability to be compatible

The players can handle DVDs and CDs, that is for sure. There are people who may want to have access to photos on DVDs or in flash discs, or even movies found in the internet. These features come in handy for opting to use the devices as digital media hubs. The specification sheet should be checked before making a choice.

TIP: Blu-ray players have vast ranges of quality. As such, key features have to be considered before before arriving at a conclusion on what to go for. Blu-ray records are also worth consideration, especially so for individuals with big storage capacities of either 250GB or 500GB.
