Dubstep Sample Packs

By Brian Kaplan

You might have been wondering why your songs sound a little like they're missing something, and you don't have the same top quality sound as Skrillex or Apex? The key is that they use top quality sample DVDs but you don't.

Virtually all commercial Dubstep artists use clips, however they wouldn't ever admit it.

Using slick, speaker-busting, drum samples is essential to making music that comes through solidly in the mix. When you employ rough-sounding drum samples your drum loops usually end up spend all that much time generating their own drum samples.

Where to Find Samples

There are two approaches to get hold of clips and loops. You can happen to find free samples online, from buddies, or you can invest in sample DVDs from quality retailers. The latter is recommended, but we'll explore the differences between both.

Free Stuff?

Free of charge samples are enticing. Who doesn't like free? If you're going to use free samples you have to keep a couple things in mind.

When you obtain free samples you need to be totally certain that the samples have been completely cleared. For all you know they could have been sampled from other artist's songs. Getting sued is the last thing you can afford!

Another thing to consider with free samples is the sound quality. Often free samples are not great quality and aren't mastered.

Commercial Samples

Purchasing sample DVDs is really the best route.

Professional sample CDs are typically pre-mastered and that means you can lay them down directly in your record with hardly any mixing. Provided you buy Dubstep samples discs that are free of royalties you have practically nothing to fret about on the legal aspect of things.

You only have to buy one sample DVD and you can use the samples to create much more exciting and different samples. Nearly all the top music producers have been doing this for years.

Anything you decide, always shoot for good quality. Often you get what you pay for, so you should not expect free samples to be the best quality. Although a $50 sample DVD might seem like a total waste of money, the effort and time it will save the producer is a total convenience.

But if you're extremely ambitious, the way to make really original dubstep is to find, record, or produce your own sounds to go with your own songs. But given the vast array of techniques you can use to change and edit found clips into something totally your own, always keep your library of bought samples and clips nearby.
