Panthers WR Devin Funchess has played three WR positions at OTAs Posted: 07 Jun 2015 08:31 PM PDT Panthers' rookie wideout Devin Funchess was touted as a hybrid WR/TE coming out of Michigan. He will be used as a wideout in Carolina, however, he may be moved all over the field. Funchess has already lined up as the X and Z, which are standard outside positions, and at the F, which is like the slot but closer to the offensive line. The F is for big physical receivers as the S or slot is usually reserved for smaller quick receivers. Funchess sounds like he just wants to make and plays and doesn't really seem to care where he's lined up. He was asked which position he prefers and said, "All of them. Wherever I can go get the ball at." FANTASY ANALYSIS: I am very high on Funchess. I'm on record saying he will be a top three rookie WR this season. With that said, I am obviously higher on him than most. Either way he's a perfect fit for Cam Newton. Newton tends to let balls sail on him at times, which having a huge target like Funchess is the best answer for. Not to mention Newton's ability to scramble and his huge arm call for receivers that can catch jump balls at times. Funchess has the potential to be a matchup nightmare, particularly from the F position. A position the Panthers will likely use him in often. |
Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston looks to stretch the field with his big targets Posted: 07 Jun 2015 08:01 PM PDT Buccaneers first-overall pick Jameis Winston has been looking to stretch the field with his big-bodied targets Mike Evans, Vincent Jackson and Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Winston is more than thrilled to have them at his disposal. "The most exciting part is the explosive plays and getting to throw to all these big-time wide receivers we have," Winston said. "That's the fun part of everything. I have three guys that are above 6-foot-3. That is amazing. That is every quarterback's dream and I got it. I have two (Kelvin Benjamins) this year with Vincent being the veteran and Mike (Evans) being an outstanding young guy, one year older than me. It's definitely a blessing to have two of those guys. But other guys like Louis Murphy, Russell Shepard and even Kenny Bell, who is a rookie this year; those guys are (also) doing great." FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's hard not to agree with Winston. He has three huge targets and can make every throw on the field. Winston is undoubtedly the best quarterback in this year's draft and could be the best QB drafted since Andrew Luck. Marcus Mariota has a chance to score some points with his legs but he can't compare as a passer. As of now, Winston is behind only Teddy Bridgewater out of all the QBs in their first two seasons. |

Steelers WR Martavis Bryant packs on 10 pounds of muscle Posted: 07 Jun 2015 07:17 PM PDT Steelers' second-year receiver Martavis Bryant was a slender 6-foot-4, 215 pounds as a rookie. He put on 10 pounds of muscle this offseason and is noticeably bigger and stronger. Bryant is projected to be the WR2 in Pittsburgh this season. He worked hard this offseason and is eager to show off what he's been working on. Everyone gets bigger and better every year," said Bryant. "I wanted to make sure I got better. I didn't want to slack off or become complacent. I had some things I wanted to get done in the offseason, so I went to work. It was just working on your details, becoming a professional at your craft. When you get back, you can show everyone what you learned, all your new tricks." FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is encouraging to hear about Bryant. Coming out of Clemson his work ethic was questioned, it certainly wasn't his lack of talent that dropped him to the fourth round. In just 10 games last season, Bryant caught 26 passes for 549 yards and eight touchdowns. With a year's experience and an increased role, he only looks to improve in 2015. He's currently being drafted as the WR28. That's right about where he should go and his upside is immense. |
Chiefs QB Alex Smith will look be more aggressive downfield this season Posted: 07 Jun 2015 06:27 PM PDT Chiefs' quarterback Alex Smith may be best known for not being able to throw the ball downfield. This season, the team wants to change that. Offensive coordinator Doug Pederson is looking to change that. He and QBs coach Matt Nagy will have their hands full coming off of a season that did not see a Chiefs' wide receiver catch a single touchdown pass. quot;If he misses a down-the-field throw, it's my job and it's our job to show him on tape exactly what he's looking at in order to see that throw," Pederson said. "That's the development of a quarterback. You do want to be aggressive. You've got to stay on the edge of aggression. When the throw is there, you make it. That's part of what we teach. Coach Nagy will set up a drill where we're reading that safety and we're shooting that ball (down the field). We've got to sort of retrain, rethink just a little bit. But going from that first year to where we are now with (Smith), now he sees that kind of stuff. It's just a matter of cutting loose." FANTASY ANALYSIS: The only reason Smith has had any level of success in the NFL is because he plays within himself. An attempt to make him a downfield passer could go disastrously wrong. He just doesn't have the arm talent to do so. Trying to force a player to become something he's not rarely works out well, particularly when that player is a quarterback. Smith has very little fantasy value and this news may actually hurt him more than it helps him. |
