Browns WR Dwayne Bowe leaves OTAs with a knee injury

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 02:34 AM PDT

Browns' wide receiver Dwayne Bowe limped of the field with a knee injury at OTAs today. The injury is not believed to be serious according to his head coach Mike Pettine. quot;We might hold him out Thursday,'' Pettine said. "I'll wait to see the results of it. It wasn't anything serious, but especially in the spring with anything, we're going to tend to err on the side of being conservative." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Bowe has been steadily and drastically declining since 2010. It's time to except that Bowe isn't very good. One thing that doesn't help wide receivers is going to Cleveland. The reason the Chiefs' WRs didn't catch a touchdown last season is because they are all horrible. Josh McCown is not an upgrade from Alex Smith. Josh Gordon is currently being drafted ahead of Bowe, that's all you really need to know.

Texans QB Tom Savage is making 'progress' in Houston

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 02:11 AM PDT

Texans second-year quarterback Tom Savage saw very little action last season. He got his shot and was promptly injured shortly thereafter. However, his head coach Bill O'Brien likes what he sees from the young QB this offseason. quot; It's not always pretty, just like with every player," O'Brien said. "But I see a guy that's made a lot of progress. I will tell you that as a coaching staff, we're encouraged with how we've seen Tom progress." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Savage wasn't particularly good in college and seemed like a pick the Texans made because they felt obligated to draft a quarterback. Both Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer are much better options. I like Mallett's upside more than Hoyer's proven mediocracy. Of course, Hoyer's struggles did take place in Cleveland, a place where QBs do not tend to thrive to put it nicely. Either way, Savage will not be winning any QB battles anytime soon, even on the Texans.

Panthers QB Cam Newton signs five-year extension

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 01:54 AM PDT

The Panthers have locked up Cam Newton as their franchise quarterback with a five-year extension. The deal is worth $103.8 million with $60 million guaranteed. Newton will make $67.6 million over the first three seasons of the deal. That's the most money over a three-year period that any NFL player has ever received. FANTASY ANALYSIS: These numbers were higher than expected, particularly the guaranteed money. Nonetheless, this is what quarterbacks are getting paid and the Panthers had to lock up Newton. His talent and upside is matched only by Andrew Luck from a pure physical abilities standpoint. People have become so incredibly impatient in today's NFL that people will hate this signing just like they did with Ryan Tannehill. The same Tannehill that was a wide receiver until his senior year and was considered a project with upside when he was drafted. Newton was also a very raw talent coming out of Auburn.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will not recuse himself from Tom Brady's appeal hearing

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 01:26 AM PDT

The NFLPA has requested that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recuse himself from Tom Brady's appeal hearing of his four-game suspension. Goodell has denied the request, quot;Because protecting the integrity of the game is the commissioner's most important responsibility, I decline to rewrite our Collective Bargaining Agreement to abrogate my authority and discretion to hear any appeal in a conduct detrimental proceeding." FANTASY ANALYSIS: This was expected. It may not be such a bad thing now though. Many people believe Goodell and Robert Kraft may have a wink-and-nod agreement to reduce Brady's suspension and that's why he did not fight the NFL on the Patriots' punishments. On the other hand, others believe the Kraft did not have enough sort and knew he would not be able to fight the league on this. Most importantly, I believe Brady's suspension will be reduced by at least two games.

Raiders QB Derek Carr beginning to throw again

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 01:05 AM PDT

Raiders second-year quarterback Derek Carr is still dealing with an injured finger on his throwing hand. He is beginning to throw for the first time during OTAs. However, he has only thrown a "few times" and only "one throwing rep". So, he still has a ways to go. He's hoping to be ready in time for training camp. FANTASY ANALYSIS: I personally believe that Carr will be very good and ranked him as the second quarterback in his rookie class before he was drafted. Going to Oakland did not help. He should improve this season but it's going to take a few years to turn around even one facet of that disastrous organization. I love Amari Cooper and Clive Walford, nevertheless, he's still a year or two away from being a decent fantasy option that you can rely on from week-to-week.

Buccaneers WR Mike Evans back at practice after tweaking his hamstring

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 11:22 PM PDT

Buccaneers' second-year wideout Mike Evans is back at practice after an injury scare last week. Evans tweaked his hamstring on Thursday and was forced out of OTAs. The team downplayed the injury. Apparently they were right to downplay it because he's already back on the field. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is great news for fantasy owners. Evans is poised to become a WR1 this season and is currently being drafted as the No. 7 WR according to his ADP. He is definitely a WR1 in 12-team leagues and could be in 10-team leagues as well. This injury should not impact how you approach drafting him. The team would not risk their best offensive player if he was in any kind of discomfort.

Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham still not participating at OTAs

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 10:28 PM PDT

Titans' second-round pick Dorial Green-Beckham is still absent from OTAs with a hamstring injury. He originally suffered the injury at rookie minicamp. This is tough news for a rebuilding young offense with a potential rookie starting quarterback, running back and receiver. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is a really rough blow for DGB and the Titans. They have very few weapons and could really use the freakishly athletic Green-Beckham. As athletic as he is, he's also very raw. He'll need as much practice as he can get and this could be a major setback. If he doesn't have a really strong preseason, you may want to pass on DGB in non-dynasty leagues.

Falcons RB Antone Smith back at practice

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 09:12 PM PDT

After breaking his leg last season, Smith is back at practice. He plays the role as the homerun threat for the Falcons out of the backfield. Before getting injured last season Smith scored five touchdowns. The shortest TD was a 38-yard run. On the season he averaged 6.3 yards per carry and 17.1 yards per catch. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Smith is a boom-or-bust back that was extremely explosive last season. He currently does not have an ADP so there is a good chance you could get him with the last pick in your draft. Without a proven back on the team, there's no reason Smith can't see even more touches this season. He certainly showed he deserves the opportunity.

Eagles QB Sam Bradford participating in 7-on-7 drills

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 08:49 PM PDT

After being seen limping around last week and rumors surfacing that his immediate future could be in doubt, newly acquired quarterback Sam Bradford participated in 7-on-7 drills today with the Eagles' first-team. He started with the first team and Mark Sanchez rotated in. Bradford is projected to be the starter, although, head coach Chip Kelly has said there will be a competition. Most believe that not to be the case. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is obviously a great sign for Bradford's fantasy stock. The issue here is, even if Bradford is the Week 1 starter, how long will he last? His current ADP has him locked in as the QB20. The upside in the Eagles' offense in clearly there. With that said, in my opinion the downside is still greater. Why draft a QB2 in case of injury or bye week if he's not going to last long enough to see the starting lineup?

Bengals WR Marvin Jones participating in 11-on-11 drills

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 08:12 PM PDT

After tweaking his hamstring earlier this offseason, Marvin Jones is finally participating in 11-on-11 drills. I say quot;finally" because he also missed all of last season with foot and ankle injuries. He reportedly looked pretty good. It's more notable that the foot and ankle look good more so than the hamstring. He is projected to start outside opposite star wide receiver A.J. Green. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Jones was projected to have a big 2014 season to follow up his breakout campaign in 2013. His absence clearly hurt Andy Dalton, especially with Green dealing with injury woes of his own. Losing a double-digit touchdown guy hampered the Bengals' offense. Jones should be considered a sleeper this season. He's high-risk and high-reward thanks to injury concerns. Nonetheless, he has a ton of value as the 69th WR off the board based on his ADP.

Browns RB Terrance West starts with first-team on Tuesday

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 06:49 PM PDT

After Isaiah Crowell started with the first-team at last week's OTAs, Terrance West started this Tuesday. This could just be the Browns mixing things up or could be a sign of things to come. Last season, the Browns rotated these two backs as well as Ben Tate early in the season. This created a fantasy nightmare for owners, however, Crowell was the back that finished the season on the highest note. FANTASY ANALYSIS: I have been a supporter of West, nevertheless, Crowell does look like the better fantasy option. Either way the Browns backfield is going to be beyond frustrating for fantasy owners. One major reason being that the best back on the team isn't either of these guys. It's rookie Duke Johnson. Johnson is the Miami Hurricanes all-time leading rusher and has as much big-play ability and upside as anyone in the league. The only concern about him is his durability.

Bills RB LeSean McCoy is expected to get '300-plus carries' according to RB Fred Jackson

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 06:08 PM PDT

It appears Fred Jackson is beginning to concede that the starting running back job will belong to LeSean McCoy. At this point, the ageless veteran just wants to help his team win. From the sound of things, McCoy will have a very heavy workload in Buffalo this season. "I don't know exactly what my role is going to be," Jackson said. "They say that they want Shady (McCoy) to get 300-plus carries next year. So that's a guy you're feeding the ball all the time. So I'll be ready when my number is called. I just want to win football games and I'll do whatever I can to help do that and when my number is called I'll be ready to go." FANTASY ANALYSIS: There is little doubt that the Matt Cassel and Rex Ryan connection will lead to an extremely run-heavy offense. Ryan loves to play defense and run the ball, having both McCoy and Cassel makes that decision much easier. While McCoy probably will get over 300 carries, that doesn't mean there will not be enough to go around. Do not write off Jackson. This team is going to use their RBs both on the ground and through the air enough that both men can be fantasy relevant. McCoy is a top five fantasy back but Jackson could still emerge as a flex option, particularly in PPR leagues.

Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron fitting in well at OTAs

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 05:51 PM PDT

The Dolphins signed former Browns' tight end Jordan Cameron this offseason. Despite the loss of athletic TE Charles Clay many believe Cameron is an upgrade as a pass-catcher. After a breakout 2013 campaign, Cameron struggled in 2014. Concussion issues have been his biggest concern. Nonetheless, according to Joe Philbin he's looking good at OTAs. "I really like the ways he's fit into the offense so far," Philbin said. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Cameron is currently being drafted as the No. 8 TE this fantasy season. That's fair value. I would like him perhaps closer to 11, nevertheless, that's all a matter of splitting hairs. Of course, the concussion concerns loom large over his fantasy value and his career. He claims that doctors have told him there are no issues and everything is fine. Many are understandably skeptical. However, while Ryan Tannehill is far from a superstar, he's infinitely better than any quarterback Cameron dealt with in Cleveland.

Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon expected to be the Week 1 starter

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 04:19 PM PDT

According to the Jaguars' official site, rookie running back T.J. Yeldon is the heavy favorite to win the starting job. He has been very impressive during OTAs and has shown excellent versatility both in the rushing and passing attack. His biggest competition for touches will be Denard Robinson. However, Robinson has questions regarding his durability thanks to his undersized frame and season-ending foot injury in 2014. FANTASY ANALYSIS: There is very little doubt that Yeldon will win this starting job. Robinson is talented, nevertheless, he is clearly not a feature back. He'll likely get some play of third downs and do most of his damage in the passing game. Yeldon has the potential to be a major fantasy contributor this season. For the most part people have doubts about his ability to produce in the Jags' offense. I believe their offense will surprise people if Blake Bortles can take at least a step in the right direction. There is a ton of young talent in Jacksonville.

Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr says hamstring injury is not serious

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 03:30 PM PDT

Odell Beckham Jr. was sidelined from OTAs with hamstring soreness. That raised some concern being that he was forced to miss the first-four games of 2014 with a hamstring issue. Beckham Jr. made it clear that he would be out there if the coaches allowed him to be. He definitely downplayed the injury. "It's just soreness in my hamstring," he said. "Just running around, (my) back being tight." FANTASY ANALYSIS: It sounds like this isn't anything to be too concerned about. Just the normal soreness that takes place during OTAs. For now it's safe to draft ODB wherever you see fit. He currently has the highest ADP in the league, which seems a bit high, nevertheless, it's understandable. I prefer taking a running back that high and still have both Antonio Brown and Calvin Johnson ahead of him.

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson reports to OTAs

Posted: 02 Jun 2015 02:44 PM PDT

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has returned to the team for the first time since being suspended for abusing his child after Week 1 of last season. He has been at odds with the Vikings since they decided to suspend him and has demanded to be traded and even threatened to retire at one point. Now he says he's just excited to be back doing what he loves. quot;I'm returning because I want to. I'm part of this football team and I owe it to the guys I play with and to our coaches," Peterson said. "I was planning on coming in this week, and I'm looking forward to getting back on the field. It's what I love to do." FANTASY ANALYSIS: I guess Peterson caved and gave up on all that "Darrelle Revis" talk. With that said, this is obviously fantastic news for his fantasy owners. He is still considered and elite RB1 and will see a ton of carries. The Vikings may even just run him into the ground, not that they ever really used him sparingly. Fantasy owners will be able to rest much more easily if AP can just stay with the team, do his job and keep his mouth shut.
