Report: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles not expecting to play vs. Dolphins

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 07:57 AM PDT

When doubt is expressed about a player's Sunday status, that doubt usually comes from anonymous sources or beat writers. Rarely do you see the doubt expressed by the player at the heart of the matter. But according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, that seems to be the case with Jamaal Charles. Rapoport tweeted this morning that Charles doesn't expect to play against the Dolphins this afternoon. He will test out his injured ankle in pregame warmups, but odds are Knile Davis will get the start and a lot of touches. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Rapoport also says that Charles' injury is more of a bruise than a high ankle sprain, which explains why he was able to return to practice so quickly. However, it's probably best that the Chiefs hold him back today. The season is still young, and they don't need to risk their best player, especially with such a quality backup like Davis available. Davis scored twice and caught six passes in relief of Foster last week. He is a high-end RB2 in all formats. Although this game doesn't kick off until late in the afternoon, this report makes it pretty safe to unleash Davis in your lineups. You can basically lock him into 20-25 touches.

Report: Texans RB Arian Foster is a 'longshot' to play today

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 07:08 AM PDT

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted this morning that Texans running back Arian Foster is seen as a quot;longshot" to play today due to a hamstring injury. If he isn't active against the Giants, Alfred Blue and Jonathan Grimes would take over Houston's backfield. Ronnie Brown might also pitch in. Foster topped 100 rushing yards in each of first two games and is second in the league in ground yardage. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Foster must have felt left out after basically every other offensive skill player got hurt in Week 2. It's not evident when or how Foster injured his hamstring since he made it through last week's blowout win over the Raiders. Whatever the case, he's not looking good for today. Blue will probably see the majority of the touches -- he got 11 carries last week while Grimes got only three. The Giants are pretty good against the run, and considering how much we don't know about Foster's backups, neither of them are more than longshot as a flex. A committee attack is likely coming. We'll see if Foster can return for Week 4. He did go through three limited practices this week.

Bears WRs Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Jets WR Eric Decker questionable for Monday night

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 11:56 PM PDT

Bears WRs Brandon Marshall (ankle) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) as well as Jets WR Eric Decker (hamstring) are all listed as questionable for Monday night. Marshall and Jeffery were both game-time decisions in Week 2 and both played on Sunday night. Marshall got his first practice of this week in on Saturday and was limited. Jeffery was a limited participant in practice all week. Decker didn't practice until Saturday either and was also limited. The two Bears wideouts are expected to play while Decker is considered a game-time decision. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is a big-time game for fantasy as Marshall and Jeffery are both projected as strong WR1 options this week against a Jets defense that has allowed the second-most fantasy points to WRs so far in 2014. Decker is proving to be the Jets' top option in the passing game and figures to be extremely active against a Bears secondary that will be without Charles Tillman after he suffered a season-ending torn triceps for the second consecutive season. It's always a risky proposition to start a player who's questionable for a Monday Night Football game. In situations like this, it simply boils down to what your options are. You never want to take a zero, but if the guy you'd be plugging in for a Sunday game is only projected to catch three balls for 24 yards, then why not hold out for the stud WR and hope he goes. Many fantasy players probably benched Brandon Marshall last week and are probably still not over his three-touchdown game. The best-case scenario is that you have one of the backups that would get the nod in this game, but if you don't have Santonio Holmes or Jeremy Kerley, then you don't have that luxury.

49ers TEs Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald questionable; Derek Carrier likely to start

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 06:00 PM PDT

According to 49ers reporter Matt Maiocco, tight ends Vernon Davis (ankle) and Vance McDonald (knee), currently listed as questionable, are both unlikely to play Sunday versus Arizona. If the two TEs are unable to go, Derek Carrier would get the start and see the bulk of the action. Davis has seven catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns through the first two games of the season. McDonald only has one catch for 9 yards. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Davis is one of San Francisco's top threats in the passing game and his absence would be a major hit to the value of QB Colin Kaepernick. He still has several threats in his wide receiving corps, but Davis is easily his favorite red-zone target and one of his go-to guys. Should Davis be a no-go, WRs Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin would see the bulk of the passing targets, and RB Frank Gore would figure to get a heavier workload versus the Cardinals. Carrier, a second-year player out of tiny Beloit College, caught three passes for 41 yards against the Bears and is an OK option if you are in desperate need of a tight end this week. The Cardinals have once again struggled in covering that position.

Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew questionable; RB Darren McFadden expected to have big workload

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 02:48 PM PDT

Whether RB Maurice Jones-Drew plays Sunday or not, Scott Bair of CSN Bay Area reports that RB Darren McFadden will see a quot;heavy workload" in Week 3 versus the New England Patriots. Jones-Drew, coming off of a hand surgery, was limited yet again in practice Friday. McFadden ran the ball 12 times, gaining 37 yards and his first touchdown of the season in the Raiders' 30-14 loss at the hands of Houston in Week 2. He added two receptions for 31 yards. FANTASY ANALYSIS: McFadden scored a meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter Sunday with the Raiders already trailing, 27-0. That touchdown turned an otherwise pedestrian effort into a 14.8-point day in PPR formats. He has shown signs of brilliance in his career, averaging more than 5 yards per carry for a season twice. Unfortunately, that was in 2010 and 2011. For the rest of the season, he's a guy to keep on your bench and use if your main RBs are on bye or hurt. For this week, McFadden is an RB3, maybe worth considering as a flex play, especially in PPR formats, if MJD doesn't suit up. While the Patriots have given up the fourth-fewest total yards in the league through two weeks, their run defense has been less reliable than their pass defense, giving up 122.5 yards per game on the ground.

Titans looking for more from talented WR Justin Hunter

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 01:56 PM PDT

Head coach Ken Whisenhunt told The Tennesseean on Friday that he needs to see more fight from his wide receivers, specifically singling out second-year wideout Justin Hunter. quot; They are going into a physical game," Whisenhunt said. "This defensive secondary plays physical with the receivers, and they have to understand they have to be disciplined in their routes, they have to battle for the ball when it comes their way. We didn't play the way we wanted to last week, so this is a chance to get on the field again and do a little better. Justin is a talented, young receiver, and I think that is part of it, being young. He has made strides since he has been with us, and I think he'll continue to do that. I think that is part of the process of growing up in the NFL." Hunter has just five catches for 89 yards through the first two games of the year. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Hunter was a hot name coming into the year as a potential breakout candidate. Unfortunately, quarterback Jake Locker hasn't played well, and Hunter hasn't stepped up just yet. However, the talent is there and the season is young. From years of playing sports, one thing that that I've learned is that if your coaches are riding you, it's because they believe in you. The fact that the Titans' coaches have had Hunter wearing a shirt that says "JAG" tells you that they don't truly believe Hunter to be Just Another Guy. The Titans are currently a touchdown underdog to the Bengals this weekend, so the chances they're playing from behind are good. This should play into the favor of Hunter and running mates WR Kendall Wright and TE Delanie Walker. Hunter and Wright are both low-end WR3/flex options for this week. Walker is a TE2 against a stout Bengals defense.

Cardinals QB Carson Palmer ruled out; Drew Stanton to start

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 01:24 PM PDT

Still waiting for the nerve in his right shoulder to wake up, Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer has been unable to practice this week and will not start Sunday when the Cardinals face the San Francisco 49ers. Instead, Drew Stanton will get the nod for the second straight week. Stanton was 14-of-29 for only 167 yards in Week 2 versus the New York Giants. He didn't throw a touchdown or interception FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's hard to say at this point what's going on with that shoulder of Carson Palmer's. Reports earlier in the week made it sound like he could play this week -- or never again. It's an issue with a nerve that just needs to quot;wake up" before he can throw. So, it will be Stanton again. Stanton has been around the block but is not someone to use in fantasy leagues. His use really hurts the value of WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd. Expect the Cardinals to rely heavily on RB Andre Ellington to try to survive until Palmer is back in the saddle.

Patriots will continue to 'play it safe' with TE Rob Gronkowski

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 11:41 AM PDT

Erik Frenz of Boston.com wrote Saturday that quot;Rob Gronkowski probably will not play 100 percent of the snaps this week. ... Patriots may continue to play it safe with [his] health." Frenz is hinting that the Patriots know what they have in Gronk and can continue to utilize him as a red-zone threat. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Using him as a red-zone target is just fine for fantasy owners. Over the first two weeks of play, Gronkowski has managed a middle-of-the-pack 10.5 points per game in PPR formats. That's likely his floor, and he always has the chance for a breakout game. He is a must-start in all formats.

Buccaneers QB Josh McCown to see hand specialist

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 11:26 AM PDT

After mashing his right hand into a defender's helmet, Buccaneers QB Josh McCown left Thursday's game with a thumb injury. Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud reported earlier today that McCown has a severely sprained thumb and will see a hand specialist. quot; All options remain open," said Stroud, which likely means surgery is among the possibilities. FANTASY ANALYSIS: McCown is safe to drop in all formats. The talent just isn't there, and his previous success looks to be a product of Marc Trestman's offense. His replacement, Mike Glennon, isn't really a great option either and should be avoided even if you need a bye-week replacement.

Cardinals RB Andre Ellington not getting goal-line work

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 08:08 AM PDT

According to azcardinals.com writer Darren Urban, head coach Bruce Arians said running back Jalen Parmele will start to get the goal-line work for the Cardinals with running back Jonathan Dwyer dealing with assault charges that will likely keep him from playing again this season. Parmele was signed by the Cardinals on Thursday. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Initial thoughts were that RB Andre Ellington as well as backup RB Stepfan Taylor would see a spike in fantasy value with Dwyer out of the picture. It appears that will not necessarily be the case. Arians announced Friday that Parmele, a 5-foot-11, 223-pound bowling ball, would be their short-yardage and goal-line back going forward. As always, we won't know it for sure until we see it, but that is what is currently being reported. If this is the case, Taylor has little to no value. Ellington's value will stay the same, which is that of a low-end RB1.
