Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey, RB Doug Martin expected to share work

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 07:40 AM PDT

Bobby Rainey and Doug Martin will share work in Thursday night's contest in Atlanta, according to Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith. Smith said that he will use a committee approach in the game, and declined to name a starter. Martin entered the season as the Bucs' feature back, but struggled with injuries and effectiveness in the first two weeks. With Martin mostly in Week 2, Rainey took 22 carries for 144 yards, and added three receptions for 30 yards. Martin was able to practice this week, and is expected to play in tonight's game. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Rainey was one of the most-added waiver pickups this week, but apparently will not have the full workload to himself. That's disappointing for for fantasy hoping for a repeat performance of his Week 2 effort. As for Martin, it's not clear how close he is to 100 percent, but he's fully expected to suit up and play in the game. Depending on Martin's health, expect close to an even work split for the two backs, with Rainey having the slight edge. Both RBs are best considered flex plays, given the committee situation.

Bengals WR A.J. Green expected to play Sunday

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 07:32 AM PDT

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis expects WR A.J. Green to play Sunday versus the Titans, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Green left the Bengals' Week 2 matchup early with a strained ligament in his toe. For his part, Green told reporters that he hopes to play, but made no guarantees. quot;I feel good. I still have some treatment to do, but it's getting better." Green did not practice Wednesday. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Green's early departuare and zero-catch, zero-yard stat line hurt his owners badly in Week 2. But the arrow is pointing up for Week 3. Lewis' vote of confidence is encouraging, but Green isn't out of the woods yet. Fantasy owners should watch Green's practice participation Thursday and Friday, which will be a good indicator of his progress. If he's able to play, he'll face a Titans secondary that just allowed Dez Bryant ten catches for 103 yards and a touchdown last week.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo will practice Thursday

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 07:24 AM PDT

Tony Romo will return to practice Thursday after missing Wednesday's practice with back tightness. Romo, who had back surgery this offseason, spent Wednesday in the weight room, working out his back. His recovery held him out of some offseason workouts, but Romo has not missed a game this season and is expected to play Sunday versus the Rams. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Romo has had a lackluster start to the 2014 season, and it's fair for fantasy owners to wonder whether his recovery from back surgery has played a role. But to be fair, the Cowboys have also struggled in pass protection, and Romo has had little time to allow routes to develop. Things might not get much better statistically for Romo in Week 3, as the Cowboys face a Rams defense that has struggled in run defense. The high-flying Scott Linehan offense that many foresaw this offseason hasn't developed so far, but don't give up on Romo yet. He's been solid for quite a few years, and deserves the benefit of the doubt for at least a few more weeks.

Browns TE Jordan Cameron looking like a go for Week 3

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 08:56 PM PDT

Cleveland Browns TE Jordan Cameron (shoulder) returned to practice in limited fashion Wednesday. If the rest of the week goes as planned, the Pro Bowler should be ready to roll against divisional foe Baltimore on Sunday. Cameron, one of the Browns' biggest weapons in the passing game, caught 80 balls for 917 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013 despite playing with three different quarterbacks. He had two catches for 47 yards in the season opener before exiting midway through the third quarter with was later diagnosed as a sprained AC joint. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is great news for Cameron owners. He was drafted in many leagues as the fourth or fifth TE off the board. WR Andrew Hawkins performed well in Cameron's absence, catching 14 balls for 157 yards in his first two games. Getting Cameron back could open things up and actually help Hawkins' value. The 6-foot-5, 249-pound tight end will also give the Browns a red-zone target they desperately need. While Cameron isn't an appealing option in Week 3 against Baltimore, he is a high-end TE1 for the remainder of the season.

Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer arrested for aggravated assault, deactivated

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 08:09 PM PDT

Arizona Cardinals backup running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested Wednesday on aggravated assault charges stemming from two separate incidents involving a woman and an 18-month-old child at his home in Phoenix in late July. Dwyer was booked into Maricopa County Jail on Wednesday on one count of aggravated assault causing a fracture, one count of aggravated assault involving a minor, two counts of criminal damage, one count of preventing the use of a phone in an emergency and assault. Upon news of the arrest, the Cardinals immediately deactivated Dwyer, issuing the following statement: quot;Given the serious nature of the allegations we have taken the immediate step to deactivate Jonathan from all team activities. "We will continue to closely monitor this as it develops and evaluate additional information as it becomes available." Phoenix police say the female and child left Arizona shortly after the incidents in July but failed to file a police report until last Thursday. After conducting interviews with witnesses and obtaining medical records from out of state, investigators felt they had enough probable cause to arrest Dwyer on Wednesday. He was taken into custody in Tempe, Ariz. Dwyer has seen action as the Cardinals' main backup to RB Andre Ellington, rushing for 51 yards and a touchdown through the first two weeks. FANTASY ANALYSIS: From a strictly fantasy perspective, Dwyer looked like he was someone who was going to vulture goal-line carries from Ellington. That is not a concern for the foreseeable future. Ellington should get the majority of those, provided he can stay healthy. RB Stepfan Taylor now appears to be the next in line should Ellington's injury to his foot cause further issues. Taylor is definitely worth considering as a stash-and-hope running back if you've got the roster space. From a cultural perspective, this is yet another black eye to the NFL. It is certain to raise the sense of urgency for the league to decide and react to these instances if and when they do arise. Let's only hope the tide slows on these type of issues.

Ravens QB Joe Flacco misses practice Wednesday

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 07:49 PM PDT

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco missed Wednesday's practice with what is being called a cold. Head coach John Harbaugh was noncommittal when asked about Flacco's status for Sunday's gave versus Cleveland. quot;I don't know. We'll see," Harbaugh said when asked if Flacco would return this week. Flacco threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns in the Ravens' 26-6 win over the rival Steelers in Week 2. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It sounds like there is no threat of Flacco missing time. While he's not the sexiest fantasy quarterback, Flacco has always been a gamer. In his seven-year career, he has never missed a start. If his "cold" develops into anything more, and he were to miss any time, backup Tyrod Taylor would get the nod. This would deal a major hit to the value of WRs Torrey Smith and Steve Smith as well as TE Dennis Pitta. As long as Flacco practices Friday, proceed as you normally would with Ravens' skill players.

Jets hopeful WR Eric Decker will play in Week 3

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 07:07 PM PDT

New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker appears optimistic about his ability to play Monday night against the Bears despite a hamstring injury. quot;Well, it's one day, my mentality is to take it one day at a time," Decker said. "I would love to play, so I am just making sure that we take the right steps. Don't do too much, but do enough to feel it out and make a decision once that day rolls around." When discussing Decker and CB Dee Milliner, head coach Rex Ryan seemed to convey optimism on their statuses. "Both of those guys, we will see how they progress," Ryan said. "They were not practicing [Wednesday], but we will see how they do. We're confident that they will be ready. We know that they are going to work to get out there. I'm confident, we'll see how it goes during the week, but I should say I guess I'm hopeful that they will play." Decker has nine catches for 137 yards through the first two weeks and caught his first touchdown in Week 2 versus Green Bay. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Decker was drafted by most fantasy players this summer as a WR3 and continues to be rated as such. With the right matchup, he could be a reach WR2. This week could be one of those games. The Bears' defense has been good, but with the loss of cornerback Charles Tillman, their secondary will be a little more susceptible than usual. Decker's participation in practice Friday and Saturday will be the best indicator of whether he will play on Monday night. If he's not a full participant later in the week, he'll probably be considered a game-time decision, and owners should find another option.

Broncos WR Wes Welker will play Week 3

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 10:12 AM PDT

Wes Welker returned to the Broncos' practice facility Wednesday and will play in Week 3, according to USA Today. The NFL and the NFLPA agreed to a new drug policy earlier in the day that resulted in reduced and overturned suspensions for a number of players, including Welker. he was in line to serve a suspension for amphetamine use until Week 6 but will be available this weekend as a result of the new policy. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Finally, it's official. This is welcome news for Welker's owners, who get the star WR back three weeks ahead of schedule. Expect Welker to be a big part of the Broncos' passing game immediately. But he'll have a tough test in his first week back as the Broncos face a strong Seahawks defense in Seattle. Welker should be slotted as a WR2 for Week 3, but is by no means a risk-free proposition. Additionally, Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders' value should be nudged downwards as he may struggle for targets in an offense flush with receiving weapons.

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson to be brought back after case concludes

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 10:03 AM PDT

Adrian Peterson will be brought back by the Vikings after his legal case concludes, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Schefter tweeted that the timing of Peterson's return will quot;depend on when legal case is resolved." After holding Peterson out Week 2, the Vikings announced plans to reinstate him, before changing course and deactivating him pending the resolution of the child abuse case against Peterson. Peterson is scheduled to have an initial hearing for the case on October 8. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Adam Schefter generally gets things right, but his tweet still doesn't totally clarify this situation. At the very least, fantasy owners should not expect Peterson to play until October 8, the date of his first hearing. That would mean his earliest possible return is in Week 6, when the Vikings face the Lions. But a Week 6 return is by no means guaranteed. His attorneys will try to bring as swift an end as possible to the proceedings, but that could still take months. For the foreseeable future, the Vikings' backfield belongs to RB Matt Asiata and RB Jerick McKinnon.
