Individuals who are trained in law are called lawyers in many countries. They may practice as counselors, attorneys, or solicitors depending on jurisdiction. People who practice law are also referred to using the term lawyer. The definition of law itself however is a system of rules of conduct used in a sovereign government. The role played by lawyers is restricted by legal jurisdictions in a place. This article is a general one, only covering basic general facts about lawyers in Marion Illinois.

In countries like US where the term lawyer is used in general sense, the practitioners have several responsibilities. Responsibilities include doing research and drafting court papers, advocacy, providing legal advice, client intake and counseling, and handling oral arguments in courts. The job description of lawyers includes representing them in court. This means that they have to make arguments in court in the place of clients.

The second very common responsibility of these professional is to do research and draft papers to be used in courts. Normally, they have to inform the court in writing before about issues in a case before the issues can be argued orally in a hearing. All relevant facts and laws must be researched thoroughly when drafting papers to ensure that there are no loopholes in the argument. How this process is carried out varies in different countries.

Attorneys work with clients most of the time. Therefore, they are needed to have skills in handling relationships with people, both professionals and civilians. Client-lawyer relationships are started when clients request to meet the practitioner. First meetings are for handling formalities and introductions. One on one meetings or use of conferencing software are some of the ways of conducting meetings.

After knowing each other, the client gets a chance to explain their case to the attorney. During this time, the lawyer normally pays close attention in order to understand all facts in the case. They may interrupt the client once in a while to ask questions or clarify a few facts. After all facts have been heard, the lawyer may explain to the customer how they understood the situation and clarify what the customer intends to achieve.

The lawyer bases on the expectations of a customer to explain the limits of the law and what can actually be achieved through the legal system. This way, the expectations of the client are shaped according to reality. Some practitioners start developing possible defenses and claims on the spot. A work plan is formulated with the consent of customer about how the process will progress and possible time frame the case may last. How much the services will cost a client is also a discussion included in the first meeting. For this reason, some professionals do not charge for first meetings.

Clients also receive legal advice from lawyers as part of their job. Legal advise is not just given by any attorney, one need to b certified to do so. License for giving legal counsel may differ from the normal license issued after training. Giving legal counsel without the license to do so is a crime known as unauthorized practice of law.

No one is immune against the law even the lawyers that have licenses to practice it. Attorneys who break the law or use it wrongfully may be disbarred. Disbarred individuals may have to stay away from the practice forever or for a given period.
