| Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well in the new year and staying warm. In the down time over the last month or so I've added quite a bit to the website and set up a bunch of new workshops. As always, the galleries on my website are constantly growing. I've updated the Dagathorn State Hospital, St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church, Chapel of the Trinity, and Huber Breaker sections, and started a whole new gallery for the Edward Bok School in Philadelphia. I also added a brand new gallery from the Owings Mills Mall in Maryland from the period just prior to the demolition. Owings Mills Mall was an upscale shopping center with other 150 stores/restaurants that declined after, among other things, a woman was murdered on the path to the nearby metro station. The mall itself was nearly gutted when I was there but there were odd bits of personality still clinging to this plane, like the light-dappled escalators above. Workshops I am adding a bunch of workshops starting in March. Based on the poll in my workshops group on Facebook I am booking locations and should have a few more shortly. - March 25, 2017 Trolley Graveyard: This is hands down one of the group favorites, and people are always asking me to set it up in times of the year when the site isn't so overgrown. Now's your chance to see it before it becomes a jungle full of ticks!
- March 26, 2017 Klotz Throwing Company: Phrases like "time capsule" get thrown around a lot but it definitely applies to this silk mill in Lonaconing, MD. It's one of the places I'm asked to set up workshops at most, and definitely not a place to miss if you haven't been there.
Publications and Such - Mike Wolfe of the awesome show American Pickers has a store called Antique Archaeology and an associated blog that just featured my work and book. You can check it out here!
- I was also recently interviewed on KNPR in Nevada. You can stream the interview here.
- Recently CSPAN2's BookTV aired the segment from my book launch party in Philadelphia two months ago, so you can stream it for free any time you want. Here's the link!
Sales - Did you know I have two Abandoned America books? Of course you do. I plug them incessantly. Otherwise they won't get bought and I won't be able to make my third one, which I'm already putting material together for. You wouldn't want that, would you? So let's all tolerate the part of the email where I tell you where you can find out more about them and that the code HOLIDAYBOOK is still good for $6.00 off any order of a signed copy through my site because I haven't got around to disabling it. We can also hopefully all put up with me asking for positive reviews on Amazon or Goodreads if you have the books and enjoy them because I kid you not, those reviews matter to publishers and if you do like the books it will help more get made.
- It's not a sale per se, but I can't recommend my good friend Matt Lambros' book "After the Final Curtain" enough. It's devoted to abandoned theatres, has a ton of historical info, and is an absolute must-have for lovers of abandoned spaces. Check it out here.
Thanks again for following my work and allowing me to send you these periodic updates. Abandoned America is one of the biggest free online collections of images of abandoned spaces - there are over 3,400 images on it currently! - and your support is what makes it possible and keeps me working on it even I go through my existential crises with it. I wish you all the best and appreciate your presence in the journey! Sincerely, Matthew ---------------------------------------------- Note: It is important to me to respect your privacy and not to bother you with updates if you'd prefer not to receive them.
