BRAZILIAN AUTHORITIES PUSH FOR SWIMMERS' PROSECUTION "Brazilian authorities have recommended American swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen face charges of false reporting of a crime, according to reports Thursday from ABC News and Brazilian outlet Globo News.  Lochte and Feigen, along with fellow U.S. Olympic swimmers Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger, initially claimed on Sunday they were robbed at gunpoint by armed men posing as police. The athletes claimed officers confronted them in their taxi while stopped at a gas station in Barra da Tijuca, a western suburb of Rio." [Kim Bellware, HuffPost]

TRUMP HURTING DOWN-BALLOT GOP CANDIDATES "Donald J. Trump's struggling candidacy has now become a direct threat to Republican control of Congress, significantly increasing the likelihood that Democrats will take control of the Senate and cut substantially into the House Republican majority next year. Mr. Trump’s string of inflammatory statements in the weeks since his nominating convention last month has sent him tumbling in nearly every state with a contested Senate race, raising Republican fears that their own demoralized voters will not show up to vote, independents will abandon the entire Republican ticket and energized Democrats will flock to the polls." NEW TRUMP CAMPAIGN CEO HAS SPOTTY TAX RECORD "The new CEO of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign failed to properly pay his taxes for several years in the 1990s, according to an analysis of public records. Steve Bannon, executive chairman of the conservative website Breitbart News, will be overseeing the Trump campaign staff and day-to-day operations. On Wednesday, Bannon took a leave of absence from his job at Breitbart, which has been one of Trump’s biggest media cheerleaders. The move was seen as a blow to Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, who had overseen the campaign for the last two months. Manafort will retain his title, but insiders said his role in the campaign will be significantly diminished." [Igor Bobic, HuffPost]

CLINTON FOUNDATION WON'T ACCEPT FOREIGN DONATIONS IF HILLARY WINS "The Clinton Foundation announced Thursday that it would no longer accept donations from corporations or foreign entities if Hillary Clinton is elected president. The decision comes amid mounting criticism of how the foundation operated during her tenure as secretary of state, potentially allowing donors to seek special access through her government post. Former president Bill Clinton also announced to staff Thursday that the final meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative would be held in September in New York City, regardless of the outcome of the election." WHY WE LAUGH AT LOCHTE AND CONDEMN GABBY "The vast gap between these two public perceptions has everything to do with the identities of the people involved. Lochte is a straight, white man, who has long been beloved for his pretty face, doofy personality and charmingly slow demeanor during interviews. Douglas is a young, black woman who has battled racialized critiques of her appearance and attitude for years, despite winning three Olympic gold medal. This isn’t to say that Lochte and his teammates should be publicly vilified. But when the benefit of the doubt is given freely to white men when they mess up ― even in cases like this one where they actually may have broken the law ― and yet withheld from others, it perpetuates entrenched systems of racism and sexism." [Emma Gray, HuffPost]

WHY DONALD ISN'T TWEETING ABOUT THE OLYMPICS "A big part of his political message, the one you hear at his stump speeches, is that America has grown weak. America doesn’t win anymore, he says. “Crippled America” is the title of his most recent book. He alone can Make American Great Again. As someone who’s been around a few campaigns, believe me: The Olympics is about the worst thing that could have happened to the Trump train. Here’s a candidate whose message depends entirely on convincing Americans that they’re living in a failing nation overrun by criminal immigrants. And for the past two weeks, tens of millions of Americans have been glued to a multi-ethnic parade of athletes, winning easily. “Make America Great Again” has never felt more out-of-touch than it does against the backdrop of tenacious, over-achieving American athletes driven by their own journeys in pursuit of the American Dream." [Alex Goldstein, Politico]

IN CASE YOU BELIEVE IN THIS KIND OF THING "In the first peer-reviewed study of its kind, researchers at the University of California, Irvine and the Carnegie Institution for Science found that the world’s leading atmospheric scientists overwhelmingly believe that condensation trails ― known in the scientific community as “contrails” and to conspiracy theorists as “chemtrails” ― are not the product of a government-funded program aimed at covertly spraying chemicals into the atmosphere to control everything from overpopulation to food supply." KEEPING KIDS IN SCHOOL, ONE DOOR AT A TIME "Since 2014, the Mayor of Tucson, Arizona, and other local community leaders and volunteers, have spent a few days each year going door-to-door urging high school dropouts to re-enroll. The small act has led to big results. The initiative, called Steps to Success, has encouraged at least 384 students to re-enroll in Tucson schools." [Rebecca Klein, HuffPost]
