Report: Seahawks have offered RB Marshawn Lynch a 'monster contract extension' Posted: 01 Feb 2015 09:05 AM PST Will today's Super Bowl mark Marshawn Lynch's final game as a Seahawk? Not if he takes what's reportedly waiting on the table. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Seattle has extended a quot;monster contract extension" to Lynch that would keep him in a Seahawks uniform for the rest of his career. The deal is thought to make Lynch the league's second-richest running back in terms of annual average value, trailing only Adrian Peterson. It would also include a $10 million salary for 2015 alone. Lynch is currently scheduled to make $5 million next season, the final one on his current contract. Including the playoffs thus far, Lynch has run for 1,522 yards on 319 carries and has scored 18 total touchdowns this year. FANTASY ANALYSIS: A parting of the ways or a retirement. For months, those were seen as the two most likely scenarios for the Seahawks and Lynch. Now, it would almost be a surprise if the mercurial one didn't return to Seattle. He's hinted at hanging 'em up in each of the past two seasons, but perhaps even he can't turn down the amount of money the Seahawks are reportedly willing to drop on him. Lynch will turn 29 in April and has averaged 345 carries over the past three years if you include his work during the postseason. At some point, Beast Mode is going to break down from all of that work. While many contract particulars are still unknown, it feels like the Seahawks are paying Lynch for what he has already done for them much more than what he will do. Without an opt-out clause after a couple of seasons, this could turn into a ball-and-chain deal for a franchise that has a very smart front office. But it's good news for Lynch's fantasy value. With so much money soon to be invested in him, expect the Seahawks to continue to use him until the wheels finally fall off. And for what it's worth, Lynch's 2014 performance didn't foreshadow any kind of rapid downfall. |
NFL Honors: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers wins MVP; Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray named OPOY Posted: 01 Feb 2015 08:31 AM PST The NFL celebrated its own on Saturday night, honoring those who really stood out in 2014. And the list of award winners doesn't provide any surprises. The top award of the night, Most Valuable Player, went to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the second time in four years. Mr. R-E-L-A-X posted a ridiculous 38:5 touchdown-to-interception ratio to help Green Bay win 11 of its final 13 regular-season games. Texans DE J.J. Watt, who was the only other player to receive more than two votes for MVP -- he got 13 to Rodgers' 31 -- was the unanimous choice for Defensive Player of the Year. He notched 20.5 sacks, an interception that he returned for a touchdown and four forced fumbles. And he probably got some credit for his three offensive touchdowns as well. Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray beat out Rodgers for Offensive Player of the Year. Finally able to make it through a full season, Murray amassed 2,261 yards from scrimmage on 449 touches. After tearing the ACL and the MCL in his right knee last December, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski put up an 82-1,124-12 receiving line. That made him an easy call as the league's Comeback Player of the Year. And despite not debuting until October, Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. received the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He set a boatload of records as he gained more than 1,300 yards and 12 scores in just 12 games. A couple of other winners: Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald is the Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Cardinals' Bruce Arians is Coach of the Year. The NFL.com Fantasy Player of the Year award went to Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell. FANTASY ANALYSIS: I guess it's not inconceivable for some 10-team-league owners to have rostered most of the players listed above. Beckham was added as a free agent for most, so that's easy. Draft Murray in the first round, and reach for Rodgers in the second. There's a chance Bell was available in the third round, and then you let Gronk's injury concerns have him fall to the fourth. You better have won your league if that was the exact case. |
