Why The Whistleblower Protection Act Helps SEC Whistleblowers

By Bob Oliver

There are certain acts and laws which serve to help SEC whistleblowers. Just as importantly, they work to protect said individuals, which is great for those who may be fearful about their employment or personal safety in general. In order to expand on this idea, I believe that it is important to go over the Whistleblower Protection Act. If you're curious to know how this can help the aforementioned individuals, here are a few details to keep in mind.

For those who are curious, the Whistleblower Protection Act is specifically designed to help workers within the federal government. Specifically, they can draw attention to illegal activity and not be fired because of said actions. To say that this can alleviate much of the burden from SEC whistleblowers would be putting it lightly. However, I think that there's more to discuss, as I am sure authorities such as Whistleblowers Against Fraud would attest to as well.

The WPA, which was passed in 1989 by Congress, was made so that SEC whistleblowers could not be retaliated against. If they were, whether the punishment resulting in termination of employment or not, the individuals in question could simply look to the WPA to help them. Even though this protective measure is in place, it seems like there are still those cases where individuals are fired. What is the reason for this, though?

If you were to ask me, why these problems continue to believe, I'd like to think that a good part of the problem lies in the lack of awareness. Keep in mind that not everyone knows their rights and SEC whistleblowers are no different. As one can imagine, this is one of the most important reasons why the WPA is so essential. Without it, you will have very little idea as to what, exactly, you have as far as rights are concerned.

No one can argue with the fact that guidance should be set in place for situations like these. The men and women involved in this type of work should protect themselves but without the knowledge of rules which exist, how can they go about doing so? Fortunately, this is why it's important to learn about the concept known as the WPA. If you'd like to know what this is all about, there's nothing wrong with researching further and seeing what's out there.
