Chargers sign WR Austin Pettis Posted: 09 Jan 2015 11:06 PM PST Reportedly released by the Rams for being late to a team meeting after Week 7, wide receiver Austin Pettis has been signed by the Chargers. The 6-foot-3, 203-pound possession receiver was selected by St. Louis in the third round of the 2011 draft. He will now compete for a roster spot in San Diego. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's an interesting opportunity for Pettis, who was never among former coach Jeff Fisher's cadre of favorites. From a fantasy perspective, however, Pettis has no real value. His skill set isn't suited to racking up points. Assuming he even makes the squad, the former Ram would be useful only if one of San Diego's other pass-catchers went down with an injury.
Packers list QB Aaron Rodgers as probable, say his injured calf will not change their offense Posted: 09 Jan 2015 10:20 PM PST The Packers didn't practice Friday, but they were still required to publicize an official injury designation for all of their banged-up stars heading into this weekend's playoff game versus Dallas. They listed quarterback Aaron Rodgers as probable with his calf injury and stated that he would have gone through a limited session if the team were required to be on the field. The Packers will officially end their practice week Saturday. Rodgers did actually practice in limited fashion Thursday and emerged no worse for wear. quot;Aaron Rodgers came through the practice with everything OK. Feels good today," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "... He's progressing forward, and I feel he will be available for the game." Although the All-Pro may not be as mobile as usual, McCarthy said his squad is "not going to change anything" about how it will attack Dallas' defense. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Rodgers is expected to take most of his snaps out of the shotgun or pistol formations so as to shorten his drops and lessen the amount of stress placed on his injured left leg. I think his price tag in some daily formats is too high to be worth the risk -- we've already seen him aggravate this injury once during a game -- but something also tells me that Rodgers is just going to light it up Sunday. A total gut call, I feel like we're going to be subjected to a "Aaron Rodgers, gritty playoff hero" narrative come Monday morning.
Bengals TE Kevin Brock to remain with the team in 2015 Posted: 09 Jan 2015 10:16 PM PST The Bengals re-signed tight end Kevin Brock on Friday. The 6-foot-5 and 264-pound TE played in 15 games this season, recording five catches for 21 yards. Despite not having much success as a pass-catcher, Brock did excel as a blocker. He was cut by the team in late August but was brought back after TE Alex Smith (biceps) was placed on injured reserve. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Both Smith and tight end Jermaine Gresham are eligible to become unrestricted free agents in March. Given Gresham's inflated salary and Smith's injury history, neither are likely to return to the team. Brock could, therefore, start 2015 behind Tyler Eifert as the Bengals' No. 2 TE. If Eifert's shoulder and elbow injuries persist, Brock may end up as the last man standing. He'll need to improve his receiving abilities, but circumstances have provided the Rutgers product and fantasy owners with a potentially beneficial situation.
Bears hire Ryan Pace as new GM Posted: 09 Jan 2015 09:13 PM PST At 37 years old, the Bears' Ryan Pace is now the youngest general manager in the NFL. Shortly after graduating from Eastern Illinois University, Pace began his career working in the Saints' front office. Over his 14-year tenure in New Orleans, Pace is said to have earned the trust of GM Mickey Loomis and head coach Sean Payton. As director of pro personnel, Pace helped to acquire QB Drew Brees in 2006. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Known for his competitive spirit, Pace said his first order of business in Chicago would be to hire a new head coach. Having spent time in Illinois the Bears' young GM is familiar with the franchise and agreed that the organization needs to re-establish its dominance as a run-first team with a staunch defense. Once a new regime is fully in place, Pace will have to decide whether or not to keep QB Jay Cutler. Noncommittal in his press conference Friday morning, the lack of talent on the free-agent market may make Pace's decision for him.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman (concussion) listed as probable Posted: 09 Jan 2015 06:27 PM PST After being concussed in Week 15, wide receiver Julian Edelman appears to be back to full health and is listed as quot;probable" on the Patriots' injury report. Edelman practiced on a limited basis earlier in the week but hasn't completed a full practice since mid-December. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The fact that Edelman hasn't practiced in full shouldn't be a concern. He's a vet in his sixth season who already has a solid rapport with QB Tom Brady. Assuming he's practiced enough to shake off any rust, the Pats' PPR machine could be in for a big day on Saturday. The Ravens boast a solid run defense but can be had through the air. Having led his team in targets and receptions throughout the regular season, Edelman is likely to exist as Brady's most frequently utilized offensive weapon against Baltimore.
Niners could unload TE Vernon Davis before next season Posted: 09 Jan 2015 02:24 PM PST After nine seasons in San Francisco, tight end Vernon Davis' roster spot could be quot;in jeopardy," according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. Davis, whose 31st birthday is three weeks away, is scheduled to receive a $4.95 million salary in 2015. Coming off of the least productive year of his career, Davis may be considered too expensive by the team's incoming regime. FANTASY ANALYSIS: In stark contrast to his 2013 campaign, Davis fell off the map this season. The former first-round pick closed out 2014 with a 26-245-2 stat line. With the exception of a few weeks, his work as a blocker was average at best and subpar at worst. Until San Fran anoints its new head coach and a new offensive system is put in place, Davis' fantasy stock is hard to discern. Though given his advanced age and precipitous drop in production, he's unlikely to be a hot commodity next year.
