Broncos tap Gary Kubiak to fill head coaching vacancy

Posted: 18 Jan 2015 08:24 PM PST

Despite announcing that he would remain in Baltimore as the Ravens' offensive coordinator just a few days ago, Gary Kubiak has accepted an offer to become the Broncos 15th head coach in franchise history. On Sunday morning, GM John Elway and CEO Joe Ellis, along with a cadre of other Denver executives, flew to Houston to interview Kubiak on his home ground. After several hours, the two sides agreed to a four-year deal, which is currently being finalized. The Broncos are expected to officially present Kubiak as their new head coach on Tuesday. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Given Elway and Kubiak's long history, the hire isn't exactly a surprise. Undeterred by a horrific 2013 as the Texans head coach, Kubiak rebounded with aplomb this year in Baltimore. Implementing his trademark zone blocking system, Elway's former back-up QB breathed new life into the Ravens' offense as well as RB Justin Forsett's career. Under Kubiak, the Ravens rushing attack ascended up the ranks, climbing 12 spots from 30th to 8th. With a stable of backs like Montee Ball, Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson, Kubiak will have more than enough weapons to keep opposing defenses guessing. Anderson is likely remain the team's RB1 as he can catch out of the backfield and should excel in Kubiak's offense. Additionally, QB Joe Flacco stayed upright for a good portion of the season as he was only sacked 19 times over 16 weeks. That sort of statistic might be enough to persuade QB Peyton Manning to stay in Denver for one last season. After a disappointing final stretch of the year, Manning could be a decent value in 2015, especially considering the coaching change and his advanced age.

Seattle CB Richard Sherman injures elbow in win over Green Bay

Posted: 18 Jan 2015 07:17 PM PST

Seattle's CB Richard Sherman suffered a hit on his left elbow while pushing Green Bay's RB James Starks out of bounds in the second half of the Seahawks overtime win over the Packers. There is suspicion that Sherman may have a pinched ulnar nerve. He will undergo a series of exams on Monday to confirm the extent of the injury. Despite holding his arm in pain for a significant portion of the contest, Sherman claimed he'd be quot;100 percent" in time for the Super Bowl. FANTASY ANALYSIS: There is no denying Sherman's importance on Seattle's defense. The shutdown corner is likely to cover the Patriots WR Julian Edelman on Super Bowl Sunday in two weeks. Edelman led New England's receivers on Sunday evening against the Colts, hauling in nine balls for 98 yards. Assuming Sherman is healthy and able to limit Edelman, the Patriots' deep threat Brandon LaFell might be in for a big game.

Falcons seem to be 'waiting on' Seattle's DC Dan Quinn

Posted: 18 Jan 2015 06:35 PM PST

The Falcons have interviewed eight different prospects - three former head coaches, one offensive coordinator, three defensive coordinators and a special teams coach - for their head coaching vacancy. After sitting down with Rex Ryan, Doug Marrone, Josh McDaniels, Adam Gase, Dan Quinn, Todd Bowles, Teryl Austin and Keith Armstrong, Atlanta has yet to extend an offer to any of the interviewees. According to reports, Seattle's DC Quinn is the front-runner for the job as the Falcons' appear to be waiting for him to complete his postseason run. The Seahawks defeated the Packers in overtime on Sunday and will be playing in the Super Bowl. If Quinn is, in fact, the Falcons' next head coach, the franchise will have to wait two more weeks before making an official announcement. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Quinn has had an impressive tenure in Seattle. Considering Atlanta's vast deficiencies on defense, it makes sense that the team would target a defensive mind. Rumors that Quinn is interested in bringing Gase or Trestman on as his offensive coordinator could give this roster much needed balance and a refreshing boost.
