Former Broncos OC Adam Gase takes same job with Bears Posted: 21 Jan 2015 11:32 PM PST Adam Gase is changing teams, but his new surroundings with have a distinct familiarity. Gase is joining the Bears and new head coach John Fox as the team's offensive coordinator after filling the same role on Fox's staff in Denver for the past two seasons. During that time, the Broncos fielded the league's most prolific offense. Gase was the OC behind Peyton Manning's record-breaking, MVP season of 2013, a year in which the Broncos set the all-time mark with 606 total points. And when Manning got injured and started showing his age in the latter half of this season, Gase effectively switched Denver from being reliant on the pass to a very productive run-first outfit. Gase reportedly agreed to a three-year deal. Over the past two seaons, the Broncos led the NFL in scoring, yards per game and passing yards per game. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Gase's job was made easier by the talent that surrounded him, but it's not like cupboard is bare in Chicago. The Bears might not quite match up to the Broncos' offense from a personnel standpoint, but a group consisting of Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Matt Forte and Martellus Bennett is nothing to sneeze at. All of those guys should benefit from Gase's teachings. Gase had a pretty smooth ride with Manning basically acting as his own OC. He will now try to fix Jay Cutler's carelessness with the football, and that will be no simple task. |
Seahawks CB Richard Sherman (elbow) expects no restrictions for Super Bowl Posted: 21 Jan 2015 03:51 PM PST Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman could hardly moved his left arm for basically the entire fourth quarter of Sunday's win over the Packers. For the Super Bowl in 11 days, Sherman said he expects no such limitations. When asked Wednesday about the range of motion in his sprained elbow, Sherman said with a smile, quot;If I had to slap my brother, I'd be able to do it." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Just what Roger Goodell needs: Another case of domestic violence. Seriously, what else did you expect Sherman to say? He will play his usual number of snaps, pain or no pain. I'm still skeptical over the original diagnosis of a sprain and think he could be dealing with something more serious, but he'll be going after Tom Brady and his receivers at full force next Sunday. |
Browns to hire John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator Posted: 21 Jan 2015 02:53 PM PST The Browns are in the process of hiring John DeFilippo to be their newest offensive coordinator, as first reported by FOX Sports' Alex Marvez. DeFilippo, 36, has been coaching in the NFL for most of the past decade. He has served as the quarterbacks coach for the Jets and the Raiders. DeFilippo established a relationship with Browns head coach Mike Pettine while both were with the Jets in 2009. Cleveland's sixth offensive coordinator in the past six seasons is a native of Youngstown, Ohio and was Oakland's QBs coach from 2012-14. FANTASY ANALYSIS: DeFilippo's first chance to be an OC comes with a perennial also-ran that generated more news off of the field than on it in 2014. His predecessor asked out of his contract because, among other issues, a Browns exec reportedly sent texts about play calls to coaches during games. DeFilippo previously worked with QB luminaries such as JaMarcus Russell and Mark Sanchez. He will tasked with getting the most out of Johnny Manziel and keeping him focused. Good luck. |
Raiders will tailor run game to fit RB Latavius Murray Posted: 21 Jan 2015 01:57 PM PST The Raiders hired Bill Musgrave to be their offensive coordinator on Monday, and he has wasted no time indicating who will be the focus of his attack. When speaking about running back Latavius Murray on Tuesday, Musgrave said he has a quot;very positive" impression of the young athlete. "Tremendous size and speed," Musgrave said of Murray via Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. "Going to tailor run game so it's right up his alley." FANTASY ANALYSIS: This shouldn't be news, but for as much stubbornness as Oakland's coaches showed with their backfield this past season, sticking with washed-up veterans Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew far too long before unleashing Murray, this is worth noting. Right now, Murray is locked in as the Raiders' lead RB, and he should be. He a height-weight-speed freak who has workhorse qualities and improving ability as a receiver. He just turned 25 years old and has unmistakable big-play skills. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry over 82 totes this season. Oakland's offense lacks talent elsewhere, but at least it sounds like the Raiders know what to do when they want to run the ball. I only hope Musgrave is telling the truth and not spouting off some false hope much like when the Bills said they would give C.J. Spiller the ball "until he throws up." That was definitely not the case in 2013. Murray has strong RB2 upside as a full-time starter. |
Report: If healthy, Broncos QB Peyton Manning will play next season Posted: 21 Jan 2015 01:27 PM PST Three quot;trustworthy" sources have told The Denver Post's Woody Paige that Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning isn't ready to call it a career just yet. The all-time great wants to keep playing for Denver as long as he passes his annual physical examination, which should take place in the next month or so. The Broncos have until March 10 to decide whether or not to fully guarantee Manning's 2015 salary of $19 million. Those physical tests will focus on Manning's surgically repaired neck and the calf/quad injuries he suffered and played through during the second half of this season. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Manning reportedly played his final handful of games with one and perhaps two injured quadriceps muscles. Paige says Manning actually had a severely strained calf. In any regard, Manning didn't have his legs under him from December on, and it showed in his results. Starting in Week 14, Manning threw two more interceptions than touchdowns in his final five games. I thought the departure of John Fox would push Manning toward retirement, but he's apparently cool with Gary Kubiak as the new head man -- surely, Manning had some level of say in his hiring -- and the future Hall of Famer should be productive in this offense if he's healthy. As long as that's true, Manning will return for an 18th season. That should make Broncos fans pretty happy. While it may be tough to remember since he ended on such a sour note, Manning looked like an MVP candidate at the season's midpoint. |
