General Information On Forensic Meteorology

By Jocelyn Davidson

One of the ways that this educational tool is used in a car accident death investigation could include showing what the victim was probably doing prior to the end of their life. This could be deduced by seeing the tire tracks, looking at the length of track and the impact site. If it were raining at the time of the crash, it could be a freak accident responsible and not driver impairment or mechanical issues.

This is commonly employed in instances where the elements could have a factor in legal matters. It could include accident reenactments as well as the factors surrounding whether something happened as an accident or on purpose. The term forensic meteorology refers to the act of studying weather and using that information to help determine the weather related events that could affect a crime scene.

Whether it is an insurance problem, airplane crash, bomb or an accident due to slipping; there are many ways to use the information found through this tool being used. Some conditions that would be looked at could be drought, flood, ice and snow. A certified meteorologist can look to see what if any precipitation was present and how it may have an effect on a situation.

If a home insurance policy covered flood but not acts of God, and the home was flooded there would be cause for using these professionals. The reason behind this is if a tornado caused a tree to be thrown into the home and the pursuing rain flooded the house, the insurance would not have to pay. If a flooding rain backed up street runoff and caused the home to flood, insurance would then have to pay for repairs.

In another instance, a customer at a store slipped and fell causing bodily harm due to a wet floor. Even if caution signs were up indicating the floor was wet, it is the responsibility of the store to keep the walkway free of debris and anything that could cause harm. If it was snowing and there was melted snow around the front door and no wet signs around, the store would have to pay for the customer to be medically treated.

The means of determining what elements are at play during any time frame includes looking at historical data on the actual conditions surrounding that date. This could mean that a crime that took place ten years ago was not necessarily a crime, but an accident. Determining the exact conditions is a science that meteorologists go to school for many years to learn.

Many civil cases today involve the results of the elements, and whether negligence is involved. Homeowners could bring suit against a city for flood damage due to sewage drains backing up suggesting that the city did not plan properly and therefore were negligent and caused harm. The professionals that practice this educational tool would be able to determine if that were true or not.

This study is not an exact science, however it is very reliable when paired with other types of investigative tools. When looking at facts and helping to indicate specific outcomes based on high probability, many forms of education come into play. For more information on this education possibility, contact your local police department.
