Week 8: Hail Mary Strategies (PREMIUM PREVIEW)

Posted: 26 Oct 2014 05:35 AM PDT

Our expert provides a hand-picked long shot piece of advice in an attempt to improve your Fantasy Football team. This week's picks include Jonas Gray, and Gavin Escobar.

Redskins QB Robert Griffin III questionable for Monday night

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 09:30 PM PDT

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (ankle) is nearing a return to the job that was Kirk Cousins' for a brief time, and that Colt McCoy may never actually get to call his. The team has officially listed Griffin as questionable for Week 8, leaving the door ever-so-slightly open that he could play this week when the Redskins take on divisional foe Dallas. The team has been preparing all week as though McCoy start. However, it's becoming clear to everyone, including the decision-makers in Washington (finally) that they need to get Griffin back under center as soon as possible. Griffin has been sidelined since dislocating his left ankle in Week 2. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's this simple: If Griffin plays, all other skill players on the Redskins get a boost. This would especially include WRs DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon as well as TE Jordan Reed. RB Alfred Morris would also get a boost, as defenses will have to respect Griffin more than they would McCoy. The bad news is that the Redskins play on Monday night, so you're likely going to have to make decisions involving these players before we know Griffin's status. Our advice is to proceed as if McCoy will be under center.

Ravens TE Owen Daniels (knee surgery) to miss at least one game

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 08:57 PM PDT

A second Baltimore Ravens tight end will miss time in 2014 due to injury. After losing Dennis Pitta for a second straight year to a hip injury, the Ravens have now lost backup Owen Daniels for at least a week after he underwent an arthroscopic procedure to clean his knee out on Friday. Head coach John Harbaugh was optimistic that Daniels may not miss much time at all after the surgery. quot; After that (the surgery) he has a chance to come back," Harbaugh said. "So, it'll be week to week after that and it won't be many weeks at all. It could actually be next week. That's an optimistic approach, but it could happen." In Pitta's absence, Daniels has been the Ravens' third-best pass-catcher with 27 receptions, 275 yards and three touchdowns. While he is out, rookie Crockett Gillmore will get the start at tight end. Gilmore was a third-round pick for the Ravens in May's draft. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This has to be frustrating for offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak. No OC has targeted the tight end more in the past three years, and now he's down to his third-stringer. Hopefully, Daniels will indeed miss only one week, two weeks tops. While he's out, QB Joe Flacco will likely lean on WRs Steve Smith and Torrey Smith. However, due to the fact that Kubiak does like using the tight end in the passing game, Gillmore is a deep sleeper and might be a decent value play in daily leagues. The Bengals allow the most fantasy points to tight ends of any team in the league, and at 6-foot-6, Gillmore could be an attractive red-zone target.

Titans RB Shonn Greene arrested for fleeing a parking ticket

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 08:26 PM PDT

Tennessee Titans beat writer Jim Wyatt reports that running back Shonn Greene was arrested Friday night for refusing to stop for a police officer. The officer was issuing Greene a ticket for parking in a handicap parking spot, and Greene got in his car and left the scene. He was later arrested, booked and photographed for his mug shot. Greene has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury. His run-in with the law is unlikely to affect his status for the Titans' Week 8 game with Houston. FANTASY ANALYSIS: All trends are heading in the direction of rookie Bishop Sankey taking the starting running back job in Tennessee full-time. He's younger, quicker, and now it appears he's less prone than Greene to ignorant decisions that land him in jail. We won't get into the societal aspect of this story other than to just say it's pathetic. From a fantasy perspective, it doesn't change much. As long as the Titans keep him around, Greene is a handcuff to Sankey at this point.

Colts RB Trent Richardson (hamstring) likely a game-time decision

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 07:59 PM PDT

Colts running back Trent Richardson (hamstring) has not practiced all week and is a likely game-time decision for the team's Week 8 game with the Pittsburgh Steelers. If Richardson is unable to play, RB Ahmad Bradshaw would see the bulk of the work at running back, with Dan Herron serving as his backup. Richardson had arguably his best game of the season in Week 7 against Cincinnati. Despite not scoring a touchdown, Richardson still put up 77 yards rushing on 14 carries and added 41 receiving yards on four catches. His 5.5 yards per carry was the greatest single-game average of his year. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Richardson is not a running back who is going to go off and put up a 35-point fantasy day. What he has proven himself to be, though, is a weekly flex option, putting up 10 or more points in PPR leagues four out of the past five weeks. He gets ripped a lot because he isn't the fleetest of foot when running with the ball. Backfield mate Bradshaw has been the much more effective of the two. However, playing on a highly efficient Colts offense engineered by QB Andrew Luck, Richardson still has value. If he doesn't play this week, Bradshaw is an excellent play and should put up RB1 numbers.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (illness) questionable, likely to play

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 07:30 PM PDT

Patriots running back Shane Vereen missed Friday's practice and landed on the Week 8 injury report with an undisclosed illness. He is, however, still fully expected to play in the team's Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears. With RB Stevan Ridley out for the season, Vereen had a breakout game in Week 7, posting a stat line of 43 rushing yards, five catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns. If Vereen is playing, he figures to be the Patriots' lead back for the remainder of the season. If Vereen can't go, expect Jonas Gray and Brandon Bolden to see the work at running back. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Vereen's main value is definitely in PPR leagues, where he is likely a low-end RB1/high-end RB2 this week against the Bears. Chicago's defense allows the eighth-most fantasy points to running backs in PPR formats. If Vereen can't go, whoever takes his place would be a fantasy reach, at best. We'll hope the reports are accurate and he plays. With the fact that the Pats have had an extra three days to prepare, it is likely that they completely pick apart the Bears' defense. If Vereen can't go, expect it to be a busier day than normal for TE Rob Gronkowski and WR Julian Edelman.

Bengals WR A.J. Green (toe) unlikely to play Week 8

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 06:53 PM PDT

NFL Media's Albert Breer reported on Twitter Saturday morning that Bengals star wide receiver A.J. Green, who is dealing with a toe injury, is unlikely to play Sunday in the team's divisional showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. Green is trying to recover from ligament damage underneath his big toe. Green has missed the past two weeks. In Week 6, the Bengals still put up 37 points against Carolina in a game that ended in a tie. However, in their Week 7 loss to Indianapolis, the Bengals' offense was stagnant, amassing a paltry 135 yards on the day. FANTASY ANALYSIS: With Green out, Mohamed Sanu figures to be the only wide receiver worth considering in fantasy. The Ravens allow the sixth-most fantasy points per game to the position, so he's a decent option in spite of the team's performance last week against the Colts. Without Green, QB Andy Dalton's value is the most impacted. The Ravens are already one of the top teams in the league against fantasy quarterbacks. Take away his top weapon, and Dalton is not a starting option in most formats. Expect Giovani Bernard to be more involved in the passing game than usual, making him a solid RB1 option, especially in PPR formats.

Saints TE Jimmy Graham questionable, likely to play

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 03:55 PM PDT

According to New Orleans Saints beat writer Mike Triplett, tight end Jimmy Graham (shoulder) is officially listed as questionable but is likely to pad-up and take the field Sunday night when the Saints welcome the Green Bay Packers to town for a prime-time showdown. After getting a week off while the Saints were on bye Week 6, Graham was active last week but did not catch a pass. He was targeted only twice on the day. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Graham was limited in practice all week but appears to be a go for what should be a shootout. Even though he played only 41 percent of the team's offensive snaps last week, he's still a player you need to use if you have him and he's active this week due to the projected high score. However, if you have an alternative option that could put up 10-plus points for you, it may not be a bad move to go that route. While it's sounding like Graham is good to go, the last thing you want to have is to have him end up getting benched at game time while you had a healthy tight end who put up 10 to 15 points on your bench. If you want to pick up a Saints tight end to be your backup plan, Ben Watson (39 percent) and Josh Hill (31 percent) each saw time last week. Each of them caught just one pass.

Saints RBs Khiry Robinson and Pierre Thomas out for Week 8

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 03:40 PM PDT

New Orleans beat writer Mike Triplett tweeted Friday that running backs Pierre Thomas (rib/shoulder) and Khiry Robinson (forearm) will both miss Sunday night's tilt with the Green Bay Packers. With the RB tandem sidelined, the Saints will turn to Mark Ingram and Travaris Cadet to shoulder the rushing load. Ingram returned from a hand injury in Week 7 and was the lead back. However, he got stuffed for only 16 yards on 10 carries against the Lions' defense. Cadet figures to fill Thomas' role as a receiving back. He's put up 15 catches for 129 yards and a touchdown over the past three games. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This should be a high-scoring game. The Saints are currently a 3-point favorite. With the Packers' pass defense being much better than their run defense, you can almost bank on Ingram finding the end zone. With Robinson and Thomas out, he is a low-end RB2 option this week. Cadet is also someone that may be worth a look this week, especially in PPR leagues. He figures to be involved in the passing game. If TE Jimmy Graham ends up missing the game or is limited in his snaps, that would also increase Cadet's value.

Lions stars Reggie Bush (doubtful), Calvin Johnson (game-time decision) on injury report

Posted: 25 Oct 2014 09:38 AM PDT

Two of the Detroit Lions biggest offensive threats are both on the injury report for their Sunday matchup with the Atlanta Falcons in London. Running back Reggie Bush is officially listed as doubtful and is unlikely to play. Star receiver Calvin Johnson is listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision. Bush is second on the team in rushing yards with 171 and in receptions with 25. He has been bothered by an ankle injury for a couple of weeks. Johnson, who has missed the past two weeks due to a sprained ankle, is still second on the team in receiving yards with 348 and is tied for a team-best two TD catches with WR Golden Tate. In Bush's absence, the brunt of the running load would fall to Joique Bell, with Theo Riddick seeing any extra work. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is unfortunate for Bush owners, but if you have Bell, this is good news. The Falcons allow the most fantasy points to opposing running backs. Expect a big day from Joique. Riddick is a sneaky flex play with Bush out. In Week 6, Riddick was used in the passing game and had a nice fantasy day, with five catches, 75 yards and a score. If Johnson ends up sitting out as well, this only elevates Riddick's value in the passing game. If you have Megatron and he's an option for you this week, be sure to check in earlier than normal. The Lions-Falcons game, being played in London, will be kicking off at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. Megatron's absence would mean a big uptick Tate, as he would be the main guy in the passing game yet again.
