Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has a 'nerve thing' in throwing shoulder

Posted: 13 Sep 2014 05:06 PM PDT

While much ink has been spilled regarding Andre Ellington's health, perhaps more attention should be paid to the man in front of him on most plays, Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer. Palmer didn't throw much during the practice week because of what head coach Bruce Arians described as a quot;nerve thing" in his throwing shoulder. However, Arians did add that he thinks Palmer will be ready to play Sunday. He is officially listed as questionable for the game at the Giants. His backup is Drew Stanton. FANTASY ANALYSIS: For what it's worth, Ellington is also listed as questionable but will continue to play through his foot injury. Palmer is clearly being nagged by something, and you never like to hear that possible nerve damage is involved. But there doesn't seem to be much nail-biting from the team or its beat writers about Palmer's status. If Palmer's right shoulder is well enough for him to play, he is a solid QB2 against a Giants secondary that Matthew Stafford toyed with Monday. The USC alum threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns versus the Chargers later that night.

Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts travels with team, still not expected to play Sunday

Posted: 13 Sep 2014 04:11 PM PDT

Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts was on a plane headed to Washington with his teammates today, but that doesn't mean he will be on the field with them Sunday. Shorts is listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury that kept him inactive for Week 1. However, he has made the trip to our nation's capital -- well, close to it -- and the Jags will test him out before tomorrow's game to see if he can give them anything. FANTASY ANALYSIS: As it is, Shorts should remain on all fantasy benches. Even if he plays tomorrow, he won't be anywhere close to 100 percent. He missed practice on Thursday and Friday. Shorts' absence will give Allen Hurns a shot to repeat his Week 1 glory when he racked up 110 yards and two scores against the Eagles. However, even with another advantageous matchup on tap, let's not go gaga for an undrafted rookie wideout after one good game. Hurns has been ranked cautiously by FFToolbox at No. 47 among WRs this week.

Broncos WR Wes Welker will not play Sunday

Posted: 13 Sep 2014 03:33 PM PDT

Broncos WR Wes Welker will not play in Week 2, according to FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo. It was previously reported by several outlets that Welker would be in the Broncos' lineup for Sunday's game. However, the NFL and the NFLPA have yet to finalize the new drug-testing agreement that would retroactively revoke Welker's suspension. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Fantasy owners are probably growing tired of the on-again, off-again reports about the new drug policy. Following a unanimous vote by player reps Friday night to approve the NFL's proposal, it looked like a deal was done. But for at least another week, the players who stand to return from suspension as a result of the deal will remain sidelined. Welker will be a solid WR2 choice whenever he's able to come back, whether that's Week 3 or Week 6. But for this Sunday, his owners need to look elsewhere. In Welker's absence, Emmanuel Sanders should continue to fill the valuable slot role in the Denver passing game.

Week 2: Game Time Decisions

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien will not play Sunday

Posted: 13 Sep 2014 03:03 PM PDT

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien has been ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Redskins, according to the Florida Times-Union. Cyprien suffered a concussion in the Jaguars' Week 1 matchup against the Eagles and was unable to pass the concussion protocol this week. He did not practice all week. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is a disappointing development for Cyprien's IDP league owners. Cyprien was pointed to as a breakout candidate throughout the offseason. His owners should use a bench spot to keep him rostered until Week 3, if they can afford it. He still has a chance at being one of the highest-producting DBs in fantasy this year. Meanwhile, the already-soft Jaguars secondary now looks even better for the Redskins WRs.

Titans RB Bishop Sankey's role will 'gradually grow'

Posted: 13 Sep 2014 02:47 PM PDT

Titans RB Bishop Sankey should see his offensive role quot;gradually grow" throughout the season, according to ESPN's Titans beat reporter Paul Kuharsky. Sankey carried the ball six times for 25 yards in Sunday's season opener. Meanwhile, RB Shonn Greene took 15 carries for 71 yards. Kuharsky says that will change as the season progresses. FANTASY ANALYSIS: We can't say we weren't warned about this. Sankey's role on Sunday hardly justified a flex start, let alone the RB2 spot for which fantasy owners drafted him. He had fewer touches than Greene and RB Dexter McCluster. The Titans' backfield is solidly an RBBC, and Sankey is third in line. Kuharsky's probably right in his prediction that Sankey will get a growing portion of carries as he gains experience, but for the immediate future, fantasy owners should plant Sankey firmly on the bench. The opportunities just aren't there for him.

Buccaneers RB Doug Martin expected to play Sunday

Posted: 13 Sep 2014 02:22 PM PDT

Doug Martin, who injured his left knee Sunday in the Buccaneers' season opener, is expected to play in Week 2 versus the Rams. Martin missed practice Wednesday, but was on the field Thursday and Friday. He is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest. Martin rushed nine times for 9 yards and caught two passes for 7 yards in Week 1 before exiting with the injury. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's good to know that he'll be on the field, but fantasy owners should be seriously reassessing their expectations for Martin this year. He gave a slow, plodding performance in his first game and missed an assignment in pass protection that had several reporters wondering if that was the reason he was benched. Still, the Rams are a significant downgrade from the Panthers in terms of run defense, so there's hope for Martin this week. It isn't time to panic yet, but it is time to let go of the idea that Martin will be a must-start RB1 this season. He's an RB3/Flex with some upside this week and for the foreseeable future.
