Redskins WR DeSean Jackson has sprained shoulder, intends to play vs Eagles

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 12:44 AM PDT

Robert Griffin III wasn't the only important Redskins offensive player who left Sunday's win over the Jaguars early. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson also got injured in the first quarter of that game; he's just not going to miss nearly as much time as Griffin will. Jackson has been diagnosed with a sprain of the AC joint in his left shoulder. However, an MRI on Monday revealed no structural damage, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says Jackson intends to play this Sunday against his old team, the Philadelphia Eagles. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Of course, everyone wants to see what Jackson has in store for the team that controversially released him in March. But keep in mind that this is the exact same injury that Browns tight end Jordan Cameron has right now. He suffered it in Week 1, was told during the week he doesn't have any structural damage and still didn't play this past Sunday against the Saints. Try as he might, I think Jackson's chances of playing this weekend are only 50-50. Pierre Garcon and Kirk Cousins' new favorite, tight end Niles Paul, would pick up most of the slack if Jackson is out.

Dolphins RB Knowshon Moreno expected to miss at least 4 weeks with dislocated elbow

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 11:14 PM PDT

Here is Knowshon Moreno's line from Sunday against the Bills: one carry, 4 yards, one dislocated left elbow. Moreno, who rushed for more than 130 yards in Week 1, will now miss at least a month because of that injury. Lamar Miller also didn't make it through the game unscathed as he injured an ankle in the fourth quarter. With the Dolphins' backfield in disarray, the team re-signed Daniel Thomas on Monday, a back who was included among Miami's final cuts in August. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Miller is considered day-to-day, but Moreno will probably be out until midseason. Thomas is just insurance in case Miller can't go, but the team said after the Buffalo game that he could have played if needed. If he is indeed OK, Miller could finally fulfill the expectations that have followed him for the better part of two years. The Dolphins' next five opponents are the Chiefs, Raiders, Packers, Bears and Jaguars. That's a tasty slate of pretty weak run defenses. This is Miller's shot.

Saints RB Mark Ingram will miss at least 1 month with broken hand

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 10:31 PM PDT

In a weekend headlined by injuries to star offensive players who saw their Sundays shortened, one of the most notable injuries didn't become evident until the day after. Although Saints running back Mark Ingram played a full game against the Browns, but he was diagnosed with a broken hand Monday. He will miss at least a month of action, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Ingram has been the subject of much derision during his four years in the league. But he was looking like a different player this season. Through two weeks, he is the fourth-best running back in standard leagues and leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns, so this is a pretty big loss for fantasy owners. The Saints will roll on with their myriad weapons and likely give Khiry Robinson most of Ingram's early-down work. He is a fine pickup; just don't go expecting him to score every week. Pierre Thomas may see a little more work on the ground now, and Brandin Cooks will continue to contribute as a runner as well. Plus matchups against the Vikings and Cowboys await these RBs.

Week 2: Beyond the Box Score

A recap of interesting stats situations with a Fantasy twist from this week's games.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews could miss 4-5 weeks due to sprained MCL

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 08:32 PM PDT

Last season, Chargers running back Ryan Mathews shook off the quot;injury-prone" label by playing a full season for the first time in his four-year career. But periods of good health for NFL players are fleeting, especially for running backs. Mathews is finding that out today; he has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL in his right knee. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Mathews' sprain is severe enough to where he could be sidelined for four or five weeks. However, Mathews is hoping to play before that much time passes. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The Chargers will presumably slip Donald Brown into Mathews' early-down role. Danny Woodhead could also see a few more carries per week, but his biggest impact should still come as a receiver on third down. Brown should be a popular pickup this week -- perhaps not quite as popular as Knile Davis, but still pretty popular. Brown, an offseason pickup from the Colts, ran for 21 yards on seven carries Sunday. He also caught three passes for 10 yards.

Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has high ankle sprain

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 08:04 PM PDT

We won't be seeing last year's top fantasy running back on a football field for a while. The Chiefs confirmed Monday that Jamaal Charles suffered a high ankle sprain in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Broncos. Head coach Andy Reid didn't estimate when Charles will play again but did say that it's not a quot;real severe" sprain. Charles gained 12 yards on three touches before departing. He has rushed for 23 yards on nine carries this season. FANTASY ANALYSIS: A high ankle sprain usually requires between three and six weeks to heal, and Charles risks suffering a setback if he pushes the ankle too hard too soon. It's a discouraging development for all of those owners who paid top dollar for Charles, understandably, only two see him struggle through five quarters of play. But the silver lining here is that Charles' backup, Knile Davis, would probably be starting for many teams in this league. The second-year back is a powerful, 227-pound, three-down back. He is big, fast and has good hands for catching passes. In relief of Charles yesterday, Davis touched the ball 28 times -- 22 carries, six receptions -- and gained 105 yards with two touchdowns. He should be the top waiver-wire add of the week in all leagues and has rock-solid RB2 value in the Chiefs' ball-control offense.

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson reinstated, expected to play in Week 3

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 07:30 PM PDT

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was deactivated from yesterday's game after being indicted on child abuse charges Friday. His banishment ended Monday as he was officially reinstated by the team. He is expected to practice this week and play Sunday against the Saints. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This afternoon, another allegation of child abuse against Peterson came to light. But according to TMZ Sports, he was cleared of all wrong-doing and never charged in that case, which dates to June 2013, because it was determined that another one of his sons suffered a cut to his forehead after accidentally bumping it on a car seat while Peterson was punishing him. In the end, Peterson has been cleared to return to regular football duties. Possible public backlash aside, it's obviously big news for the Vikings' offense. Peterson will face a Saints squad that allowed more than 120 rush yards in its first two games. He remains an elite RB1.

Week 3: Waiver Wire Pickups

The best Fantasy waiver wire additions available in the majority of leagues. This week's picks include Kirk Cousins, C.J. Anderson, Jonathan Dwyer, Latavius Murray, and Davante Adams.

Redskins QB Robert Griffin III dislocates left ankle, MRI coming Monday

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 09:44 AM PDT

Fantasy owners have learned in the past couple of years to always hold their breath when Robert Griffin III is on the run. On Sunday, fears were realized on Washington's second offensive series. Griffin scrambled to the right and came down awkwardly on his left foot. He had to be carted off the field and was diagnosed with a dislocated ankle. How much time he'll miss will be determined by an MRI on Monday, but the team is reportedly hoping that Griffin is out for only four or five weeks. Kirk Cousins replaced Griffin and led the Redskins on seven scoring drives in their 41-10 drubbing of the Jaguars. Cousins completed 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Griffin is one of those rare cases at quarterback where if you drafted him, you needed to handcuff him to his backup. And here's why. While the team is crossing its fingers for a month-long absence, Griffin might very well be finished for the season. Again, an MRI will determine how much damage has been done to that ankle. Cousins has a couple of favorable matchups in the next two weeks; he faces the Eagles on the road and then hosts the Giants before Washington's Week 5 bye. He looked very poised and polished against Jacksonville and is a worthy start in two-quarterback leagues. As badly as Griffin was playing prior to his injury, Cousins' presence doesn't hurt the values of any of Washington's skill-position players, and it might help Alfred Morris.
