Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is the 'star' of training camp Posted: 12 Aug 2014 09:06 PM PDT ESPN's David Newton says that WR Kelvin Benjamin is the quot;star of Panthers camp." The rookie receiver will be the Panthers' WR1 this year, after impressing coaches and fans in the teams first preseason game. In that game, versus the Bills, Benjamin's highlights included a 29-yard touchdown catch. The 6-foot-5 rookie will line up alongside veteran WR Jerricho Cotchery and TE Greg Olsen as the team's primary receiving threats. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Benjamin is being drafted 42nd among wide receivers, and could end up being one of the best the sleeper picks of the year. He's flown below the radar so far, as owners opt for other rookie receivers like Bills WR Sammy Watkins and Buccaneers WR Mike Evans ahead of Benjamin. But with the playing time he'll be seeing, as the top option in QB Cam Newton's offense, he holds tremendous value. Strongly consider taking the rookie ahead of his current 11th -round ADP.
Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski questionable for Week 1 Posted: 12 Aug 2014 08:55 PM PDT A source close to the Patriots says that TE Rob Gronkowski's chances of playing in Week 1 of the regular season are currently at 50 percent, according to ProFootballTalk. Gronkowski underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL suffered on December 8 of last year. The tight end has been taking part in individual drills at Patriots camp, and recently was cleared to participate in 7-on-7 work, but is a quot;far from a sure thing" to be in the field to start the season. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Given the sluggish pace of Gronkowski's recovery, this news isn't surprising. It's important to note that Gronkowski avoided the PUP list designation, which would have kept him out for the first six weeks of the 2014 season. That means the Patriots expect him back within that time frame. But the fact that he's a coin-flip for the first game of the season does not speak well to his field-readiness. Fantasy owners have not discounted Gronkowski's draft stock to reflect his injury situation. He's going second among all TEs, as a third-round pick in most drafts. Owners would do well to factor in Gronkowski's current slow recovery and overall injury history to their valuations.
Redskins RB Alfred Morris working on his pass-catching Posted: 12 Aug 2014 08:13 PM PDT Alfred Morris is the exact definition of a work-horse back. In his first two seasons in the NFL, Morris tallied 335 rushing attempts in 2012 and 276 in 2013. He also averaged at least 4.6 yards per carry in 2013, a slightly lower mark than his 2012 season. Morris is talented in almost every aspect, except catching the ball. Jay Gruden, head coach of the Redskins does not see Morris as a player who possesses 'natural hands.' With only nine receptions in 2013, Morris is looking to heavily improve on that number. From reports, Morris is catching passes before and after practice with running backs coach Randy Jordan. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Alfred Morris is an extremely likable fantasy prospect. He's consistent with the amount of touches he receives and you know what you're getting with him. Morris is almost essentially a lock for 1,000 yards rushing. The problem lies in his lack of TD production and receiving skills. If Morris isn't out on the field participating in the passing and running game, his value is diminished. There are plenty of backs in the league that provide a tandem of receiving and running skills, a highly valuable combination. If Morris truly does emerge as a slightly larger weapon in the passing game, his ceiling is slowly raising. I see Morris as a steal in the third round of most drafts.
Eagles QB Nick Foles only looks 'decent' in camp Posted: 12 Aug 2014 05:14 PM PDT Nick Foles certainly did not perform to expectations in his last preseason game in which he threw two interceptions. The word out of camp is that Foles isn't shining as he was last year. Nick Foles has been reported to look only 'decent' in camp according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. In the Eagles and Patriots scrimmage on Tuesday, Foles' struggles continued. He's been missing wide open receivers, even overthrowing wheel routes to LeSean McCoy out of the backfield. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Although the proverbial Titanic has yet to sink, will it? Foles has such a large amount of pressure to perform similarly to last year and that may be too much for him to handle. We all knew there would be a regression from last season, 27 touchdowns with only two interceptions is not a sustainable ratio. Foles is coming off the tables in approximately the sixth round, an extremely costly pick for the struggling quarterback. I'm waiting to see how Foles performs in upcoming games to fully understand his situation, as should you.
Texans RB Jonathan Grimes listed as 'unofficial' backup Posted: 12 Aug 2014 04:55 PM PDT Jonathan Grimes first appeared in the Texans preseason opener rushing 10 times for 39 yards. With Andre Brown being cut, Grimes was the favorite to take over the backup position. An unofficial depth chart was released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday indicating Grimes is 'unofficially' the backup to Arian Foster. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is big news regarding who to own in the Texans backfield. If Arian Foster were to go down, there is very little doubt Grimes would not take over. Grimes has shown flashes of potential, but has suffered victim to the practice squad carousel. He was resigned by the Texans three different times, proving the team was indecisive about keeping him on the roster. In week 17 of the 2013 season, Grimes started his first game rushing 16 times for 50 yards and also had six receptions for 76 yards. He is a viable backup to Foster, and should be rostered in all formats.
Jets QB Geno Smith starting on Saturday Posted: 12 Aug 2014 04:36 PM PDT There is a shroud of mist hovering over the starting quarterback position for the Ney York Jets. In the spring, Michael Vick made it known that it isn't necessarily an open quarterback competition. Vick has seen a lot of work in camp, and so has Geno Smith. This past week, though, Smith took 63 of 75 first-team repititions in practice. Rex Ryan, the coach of the New York Jets, was hesitant to name a starter for this Saturdays' preseason game. Ryan ultimately decided Smith would be the starter for the Jets' next preseason game according to ESPN New York. FANTASY ANALYSIS: In my own opinion, the Jets, specifically their head coach, love the media. Ryan constantly feeds the media with his antics and decisions. The decision between starting your young, developing quarterback over an injury-prone veteran is a simple one. The only fuel for the fire is Ryans' hesitation to name Smith as the starter for the Jets during the regular season. Smith has the ability, but on a Jets team with little offense potential, I would stay away from him for now.
Redksins TE Jordan Reed returns to practice Tuesday Posted: 12 Aug 2014 04:24 PM PDT Jordan Reed returned to the practice field for warm ups on Tuesday, according to Mike Jones on Twitter. Reed had missed practice the past three days due to a stomach virus. The sophomore tight end has been impressing teammates in camp, and they are hoping to see him pick up where he left off. In 2013, Reed emerged as a fantasy viable tight end with 45 receptions, 499 yards and three touchdowns in nine games. With a year under his belt, things are only looking up for him. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Reed produced extremely well last year sans the fact he was a rookie. He is still learning a new offense and needs more time to fully develop. Aside from the development, Reed also needs to pace himself. After suffering a concussion last year and being placed on injured reserve, some are worried he's injury prone. Reed gets constant praise from his coaches and teammates, proving there is some major talent there. Reed is a young, developing tight end in a fast-paced offense. He is easily a TE1, and if you're worried about the concussion history, you may want to snatch a backup.
