Chiefs TE Travis Kelce shows breakaway speed on 69-yard touchdown

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 11:18 PM PDT

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Travis Kelce with the first pick in the third round of the 2013 draft. He had microfracture surgery on his knee in October and never saw regular season action last season. In the team's Thursday night pre-season opener, the 6'5quot; tight end out of the University of Cincinnati showed a flash of why the Chiefs thought so highly of him. The highlight is below. www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2014080703/2014/PRE1/bengals@chiefs#menu=gameinfo|contentId%3A0ap3000000375323&tab=recap In his final season for the Bearcats in 2012, Kelce caught 45 balls for 722 yards and eight touchdowns, winning the title as Tight End of the Year at the College Football Performance Awards. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's just one play, but wow! Spending a third round pick on anyone tells me that NFL executives saw the potential here. If he lives up to it and has more plays like this one, Kelce is going to be a fantasy favorite for a long time. He currently sits as the No. 2 tight end on the Chiefs depth chart. But, to see a 6'5" tight end break away from DBs like this? Kelce's current ADP is 181, making him a 15th round pick. He's definitely a potential sleeper at the TE2 position. Kelce is a player who I'll be watching closely through the rest of the pre-season.

49ers RB Carlos Hyde carries five times for 39 yards in preseason opener

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 08:24 PM PDT

Carlos Hyde looked impressive in the first NFL action of his career, taking five carries for 39 yards in the 49ers preseason loss to the Ravens. With veteran 49ers RB Frank Gore sitting the game out, Hyde capitalized on his chance to play with the offensive starters. His attempts included a 19-yarder burst that showcased Hyde's decisiveness as a runner. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The former OSU Buckeye made a very strong case for himself tonight. If Frank Gore goes down to injury or, more likely, struggles to be an effective runner over the second half of the season, Hyde could emerge as one of the impact rookies in 2014. But you may not be able to land him on your roster cheaply. Hyde is fully valued as the 36th running back off the board in fantasy drafts.

Jets RB Chris Ivory goes down with injury in preseason game

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 06:47 PM PDT

New York Jets running back Chris Ivory went down with what looked to be a rib injury versus the Indianapolis Colts in Thursday night's preseason game. After the injury he walked off the field and didn't return. It's a situation to monitor and we'll have updates as new information comes out. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Ivory projects to be the goal-line back while Chris Johnson would be the lead back in the Jets offense. If it's a serious injury, Johnson would get a boost in fantasy value, only competing with passing back Bilal Powell. Head coach Rex Ryan could also have held him out as a precaution. It's a situation to monitor.

Packers WR Randall Cobb fails to impress at camp

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 01:53 PM PDT

Randall Cobb has quot;looked rather common" in training camp, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn. The beat writer says that Cobb has had difficulty getting separation in drills, has made some bad drops, and has displayed no "instances of dominating performance." McGinn goes on to say that Packers QB Aaron Rodger has been throwing more to his younger receivers than to Cobb. Cobb missed every game between Week 6 and Week 17 last year with a broken leg. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is really bad news for Cobb. A beat writer's opinion is far from gospel, but this article was pretty brutal. If it's true that Cobb is struggling to regain explosiveness following his broken leg in 2013, his draft stock needs to be downgraded significantly. It's possible that through the injury, Cobb lost a step. He is being taken 10th among all receivers. Don't panic just yet, but maybe notch him down a few spots in your rankings until he proves he's ready to play at an elite level again.

Ravens RB Bernard Pierce is the 'best running back in camp'

The 24-year-old Pierce will get to start the season as the Ravens' top RB, with Rice out for two games with a suspension. If Pierce is able to run effectively during that stretch, he may work his way into the better half of a timeshare with Rice for the 2014 season. FANTASY ANALYSIS: 0 0 1 68 392 RealEstateAuctions.com 3 1 459 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} This opinion has been whispered by analysts for several weeks, but this is a ringing endorsement from an ESPN writer. What we saw from Rice last year was not good. He's got a tremendous amount of mileage on his legs, and it appears his body is starting to fail him. Add in the fact that Pierce gets a free shot for the first two games of this season, and there's a very good case to be made that this is the year we see a changing of the guard in Baltimore. Pierce is ranked 35th among running backs by FFToolbox.com, while Rice is ranked 26th.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman 'on the right track'

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 12:44 PM PDT

The Falcons are heavily in need of a productive running back in 2014. Their passing game will be stellar this year with the return of Julio Jones and Roddy White. With Jones and White stretching the field, there will be room for Steven Jackson or Devonta Freeman to tear up the inside. According to the Falcons' offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, quot;Freeman is coming along just fine," and, "He runs hard, is eager, is willing, does not back down from anything." However, Freeman has apparently been struggling with pass protection in camp. According to Koetter, he has been just "OK" and he thinks, "That's the biggest adjustment for a running back going from college to the NFL." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Steven Jackson is already 31 years old and will eventually pass on the torch. He is currently nursing a hamstring injury, allowing Freeman to get plenty of playing time. The fact of the matter is, when will the torch be passed? If it's this year, Freeman is a must-own running back in all formats. In redraft leagues, Freeman is going late in the eighth round. Among most choices at running back at that point in the draft, Freeman has the most promise. If he can continue to improve in pass protecting, he could be seeing the field more than we currently think.

Browns WR Josh Gordon has yet to commence settlement talks

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 12:23 PM PDT

As days continue to tick by, the possible suspension scenario for Josh Gordon is becoming more boom or bust. If a deal has yet to be made the NFL and NFLPA they may not want to reach a settlement, indicating Gordon will either be suspended an entire year or not suspended at all. If Gordon reaches a settlement that only suspended him for 15 games, he could rejoin the team in the 2015 offseason. Otherwise, as it currently stands, he would be suspended up until a timeframe within the preseason schedule of 2015. If Gordon wants to possibly come back and play this season, he would have to decline any sort of settlement and hope for the best. The risk being that he would be suspended for a full-calendar year's length. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Gordon brought electricity to the Browns' offense in 2013, a feat that was not present in the offense for years. The Browns have a resemblance of a solid team for the first time in what feels like forever. Without Gordon, the Browns are a middling team. With Gordon, the Browns are a middling team with playoff potential. No one knows what is going to happen, but from a fantasy perspective, Gordon is worth owning as of now. With an ADP of 132, he is a late-round flyer for the cost of a kicker. I say take the risk.
