Falcons WR Roddy White gets contract extension Posted: 24 Jul 2014 09:11 AM PDT White and the Falcons have agreed to a three-year extension that will tie the veteran wideout to the team through the 2017 season. Reports had emerged previously that White wanted a new deal before the start of training camp, and now that has been accomplished. White caught 63 balls for 711 yards and three touchdowns last year, his lowest totals since 2006. White will look to improve on those numbers as Falcons WR Julio Jones returns to the team this season following a foot injury that kept him out most of last year. FANTASY ANALYSIS: With HBO's quot;Hard Knocks" coming to town for training camp, it's good that the Falcons were able to get this deal done. White will now be able to focus on football without contract distractions being amplified by the show. While he posted some of the worst numbers of his career last season, he did so without complimentary wideout Julio Jones in the lineup. White is a much better player when Jones is on the field to distract defenses. When the two are on the field together, White is a solid WR2, and should be drafted as such. He looks like a very strong value pick at his current ADP of 55th overall.
Ravens RB Ray Rice to receive two-game suspension Posted: 24 Jul 2014 08:58 AM PDT ProFootballTalk reports that Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice will be suspended two games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Rice was caught on tape striking his wife unconscious in an Atlantic City casino elevator on February 15. He originally faced a felony assault charge, but enrolled in a pretrial intervention program that will allow him to avoid jail time. Rice will miss the first two games of the season against the Bengals and the Steelers. FANTASY ANALYSIS: There's a lot of much-warranted discussion taking place right now about the message the NFL is sending by suspending players a year for substance abuse issues, while handing Rice a very-lenient two-game suspension for a violent offense. There's a strong whiff of wrongness about that. As far as fantasy goes, Ravens RB Bernard Pierce will fill in for the two games Rice will miss. If Pierce is able to take advantage of the opportunity, we could see a changing of the guard in Baltimore, especially if Rice continues the ineffective rushing he showed for most of last year. Rice is currently being drafted 27th among running backs, while Pierce is going 36th.
Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon arrested for possession Posted: 24 Jul 2014 08:44 AM PDT Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon was arrested Wednesday night after police found marijuana in his car during a routine traffic stop, according to Newson6.com. Last October, Blackmon was served a one-year suspension without pay by the Jaguars for his substance abuse problems. He has now missed 14 games in his two NFL seasons due to drug-related suspensions, and it looks as though that number will be increasing. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This story isn't surprising, but it is sad. Blackmon has flashed tremendous potential when he's been on the field for the Jaguars, particularly in his first two games of the 2013 season when he caught a combined 19 balls for 329 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, his off-the-field substance abuse issues look set to end his career. If Blackmon could get his act together and focus on being a professional football player, he'd likely be a solid WR1. But as things stand today, he's undraftable. With Jaguars WR Ace Sanders also recently suspended for four games, WR Cecil Shorts and rookies WR Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson will be candidates to take on the extra work.
