Titans RB Shonn Greene may not make final roster

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 01:21 AM PDT

The Titans would like Shonn Greene to fill the role of short-yardage pounder while backing up Bishop Sankey this year. But Greene can't do those things if he's not on the roster, and Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean thinks he may not be when the season begins. Wyatt opined Monday that a disappointing 2013 season followed by a spring wiped out by the second surgery on his right knee in eight months has left Greene with a make-or-break training camp in front of him. He should be healthy when camp opens next week, but Wyatt thinks that if Greene doesn't perform well, he is a candidate for release. He is scheduled to make $2.3 million in salary this season, and the Titans have a couple of possible big-back replacements on the roster in Jackie Battle and undrafted rookie Antonio Andrews. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's just a guess, but Wyatt is being consistent. He thought the same thing back in May. The Titans may have been disappointed by Greene's performance last year, but anyone who has watched him the past few years probably was not. He's a very pedestrian runner with no wiggle or burst, and he doesn't contribute much in the passing game. And now he's got a bad knee. Given the current economic climate for running backs, Greene is overpaid. He is scheduled to make even more money -- $3.25 million -- in 2015. We already know that Battle is no great shakes, but at least he is cheaper and versatile. Andrews, who is 5-foot-10, 225 pounds, could be a dark horse to steal a handful of touchdowns this year. If Greene is cut, I doubt he'll be unemployed for long because he was a 1,000-yard player just two years ago and is still in his 20s. He'll be a weak handcuff either in Tennessee or somewhere else this season.

Cowboys QB Kyle Orton released, expected to retire

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 12:43 AM PDT

Although Kyle Orton skipped all workouts and physicals in the spring, the Cowboys were still holding out hope as late as last week that the nine-year veteran would return to take part in training camp and play this season. The hope ended Tuesday as the Cowboys released Orton, who is expected to retire. Orton spent the past two years as Tony Romo's backup and threw a total of 61 passes in that time. The other two quarterbacks currently on the Cowboys' roster are Brandon Weeden and Caleb Hanie. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Orton's career probably won't be remembered fondly or at all. He had a rough time with the team that drafted him in Chicago, and it looks like the final pass of his career will be a interception right into the hands of Brandon Boykin to clinch the NFC East title for the Eagles. But Orton had a pretty respectable time in the league for a fourth-round pick. As far as fantasy memories go, we'll always have that two-month stretch during the 2010 season when he produced like a QB1 stud in Josh McDaniels' offense.

Bengals could use RBBC between RBs Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 07:00 PM PDT

According to Bengals.com editor Geoff Hobson, you could quot;see it close to an even split" in the Bengals' backfield this season between Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill. Bernard is the starter with a probable increase in carries but the Bengals will look to protect Gio and split the workload between rookie Hill, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and even Rex Burkhead. FANTASY ANALYSIS: This is definitly not the news you want to hear going into the season and also into the upcoming fantasy footballl 'Draft Month." I know for one, I am high on Gio and expect him to produce as a RB1 and if possible better. This was surely not somthing we wanted to hear and just adds to the hindering ability to find a running back that is 'the guy' on his team. I like to refer to this as running back starvation as the copy cat league the NFL is continues to see teams implement the RBBC [running back-by-committee] mentality. With all that said, I also take this information with a grain of salt considering their is no true verification of the game plan and it is stated that you "almost could" see a even split. This isn't the news or rumor you want to see spread. Stay true to the course, draft Bernard early and often. Gio at this time is the 11th RB off the board and sits in at 18th overall if not better. Lets see what happens as we get closer to week 1 kickoff but until then, don't shy away.

Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin says he feels faster after torn ACL

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 04:16 PM PDT

Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin missed all of last season after tearing his right ACL early in training camp. He shared a unique perspective on that major injury last weekend, saying that tearing his ACL for the second time has actually made him better. quot;In some ways, I feel faster," Maclin told Philly.com on Saturday. "In some ways, I feel more fresh, more physically strong. I just think you put so much hard work into your rehab process that that's kind of what happens. You get that leg back. You build that leg back stronger." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Maclin's leg has been healed and ready for go for a while as he participated in Philly's entire offseason program. He enters his sixth season as the Eagles' assumed No. 1 and looking for his first 1,000-yard campaign. Even with DeSean Jackson gone, I'm not sure Maclin will reach that plateau. Chip Kelly loves to run the ball and spread it around. Plus, Maclin has made it through 16 games only once in his career. I think he will lead this receiving corps in yardage, but I wouldn't draft him as more than a WR3. If I had to own an Eagles receiver, taking draft position and upside into account, it would be tight end Zach Ertz.

Lions WR Golden Tate: The sky is the limit for me in Detroit

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 03:50 PM PDT

Lions wide receiver Golden Tate fully understands how different his new offense operates compared to the one he came from in Seattle. quot;I have a chance to catch a ton more balls," he said Monday on ESPN's First Take via NFL.com's Mike Coppinger. "I'm going to see a lot of single coverage. I'm probably going to see a lot of No. 2 and No. 3 cornerbacks because everyone's going to be on [Calvin Johnson]. "I'm excited. I think the sky's the limit. I think it's going to get back to the old Golden." FANTASY ANALYSIS: The Lions won't throw it quite as much with Scott Linehan now calling the plays in Dallas. But the drop shouldn't be too severe as the new offensive coordinator is Joe Lombardi, a Sean Payton disciple from New Orleans. Regardless, no team has thrown fewer passes over the past two seasons than the Seahawks. There is no doubt that Tate's numbers will rise in Detroit. He set easily attainable career-highs with 64 catches and 898 yards last year. As Tate referenced, defenses can't afford to pay a lot attention to him with Johnson and Reggie Bush streaking down the field. With his quickness and big-play ability, I think Tate is a steal with his current low-end WR3 ADP.

Dolphins WR Mike Wallace may return kickoffs

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 03:28 PM PDT

Wallace says that he may be utilized by Dolphins special teams this season as a returner. quot;I might get back there for kickoff returns," Wallace said. "At this point of my career, I just want to get the ball in my hands and make some plays." Wallace caught 73 balls for 930 yards and five touchdowns for the Dolphins last season. This spring there was talk that the Dolphins were seeking to trade Wallace, after awarding him a $60 million, five-year deal before the 2013 season, but at this point it looks like he'll be a Dolphin in the coming year. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's doubtful that kick returns will make any meaningful impact on Wallace's fantasy output, but would certainly put him at increased risk of injury. For the past two seasons Wallace has struggled to duplicate the success he enjoyed early in his career, although his numbers in his first year at Miami were better than many fantasy players realize. Wallace will look to return to his early-career form in the 2014 season, as he continues to adjust to a new quarterback and new system. However, the Dolphins' lack of other serious offensive threats may continue to hamper his production, as the speedy receiver draws the bulk of defensive attention.

Falcons WR Roddy White still waiting for contract extension

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 09:50 AM PDT

ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure reports that WR White, who is in the final year of his deal with the Falcons, had expected to have a contract extension in place following the NFL draft this spring. According to McClure, the 32-year-old White wants to play three or four more seasons, and retire with the Falcons, with whom he's spent his entire NFL career. The Falcons report to training camp July 25, and will be the subject of the 2014 edition of HBO's quot;Hard Knocks." FANTASY ANALYSIS: While there's been no mention of a holdout from White, expect this situation to be heavily dramatized if the Falcons don't offer their veteran WR a contract extension before camp. "Hard Knocks" has a way of turning small training camp drama into big headlines. White's statistical output should improve somewhat over last year, with standout WR Julio Jones returning to the Falcons active roster. White has taken advantage of increased opportunity over the past few seasons, as defenses have increasingly keyed on Jones.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers wants to run 75 plays per game

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 08:23 AM PDT

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and QB Aaron Rodgers want to increase to speed of the Packers offense to 75 plays per game this season, which would place them among the fastest-paced offenses in the NFL. quot; That seems to be the answer to some of the different things that defenses are doing," Rodgers said of the plan. According to head coach McCarthy, that type of offense would require RB Eddie Lacy to become a three-down back. Last year, the Denver Broncos ran the fastest offense in the NFL at an average of 72 plays per game. FANTASY ANALYSIS: While planning and execution are two different matters, it's hard to doubt the Packers ability to speed up their offense, especially with QB Rodgers at the helm. This is interesting fantasy news for a lot of Packers players, including WRs Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson, and most of all RB Eddie Lacy. If Lacy's able to improve his blocking and receiving skills and take on full-time third-down duties, he'll have a shot at becoming the number one fantasy running back in the 2014 season.

Former Packers TE Jermichael Finley to undergo medical testing

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 08:00 AM PDT

The free agent TE Finley, who suffered a season-ending spinal contusion last year, will undergo medical testing Wednesday to hep determine his fitness to play this season, with results to be sent to all 32 NFL franchises. Finley has been working out, and has reportedly visted the Seahawks and Patriots, in addition to his former Packers team. The Steelers have also expressed interest in Finley, who caught 25 balls for 300 yards and three TDs in six games last season. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Finley's injury was one of the scariest of the 2013 season. He was confined to a hospital bed, unable to walk, for several days after the hit. Many speculated that his career was over, so it's heartening (if a little frightening) to see him attempting a comeback. RIght now, the Packers seem to be the most likely destination, since Finley knows the system, the organization and QB Aaron Rodgers so well. If he is indeed able to return, he'll be something of a wild card in fantasy drafts. But with his considerable upside, it's not difficult to imagine Finley returning to top ten TE status this season.
