Steelers RB Dri Archer to be used as offensive weapon Posted: 13 Jul 2014 02:48 AM PDT Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed rookie running back Dri Archer will be used at both wide reciever and running back in the offensive scheme. He will also be featured as a punt return/kick return specialist. Sporting 2014's fastest Combine speed at 4.26 but having a small body frame, he will be utilized similar to Dexter McCluster when he played in Kansas City. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Archer has the speed but doesn't have the size to be a serious NFL running back. Even if starter Lequot;veon Bell was to go down to injury, LeGarrette Blount would be the immediate backup. As far as playing wide out, he would be behind Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore and Martavis Bryant. He should be off the radar in redraft leagues and only considered a deep bench stash in dynasty formats.
Browns QB Brian Hoyer says he is fully healthy, ready for camp battle versus Johnny Manziel Posted: 12 Jul 2014 10:59 PM PDT The Cleveland Browns' best quarterback last season played just two full games. Brian Hoyer performed well in Weeks 3 and 4, leading the team to a couple of wins and throwing five touchdowns. Then, just as Hoyer was getting his feet under him, his right knee blew out. He tore his ACL early in the Browns' Week 5 game versus the Bills. Nine months later, Hoyer confirmed Saturday that he is 100 percent and ready to roll for his training camp competition versus Johnny Manziel. quot;No doubt," Hoyer said when asked if he has fully recovered from his knee surgery. "I'm ready to go, so can't wait for Day 1. "I'm not looking for anything to be handed to me and I know Johnny, he's going to push me to his full extent. I'm looking forward to just going out there and playing football and competing, so it's an exciting time." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Hoyer took part in some OTAs with a brace on his knee. I assume that brace will be gone when training camp opens. At that point, Hoyer will be the Browns' starting quarterback. Can he hold off Manziel? Not for too long. Perhaps he gets into the season as the starter, but Hoyer will have to play pristine ball to keep the clamor for Manziel at a reasonable pitch. So many people outside of the organization will push for Manziel, because they want to see him play. I want to see him play. He is a pure shot of adrenaline. Hoyer is gray next to the colorful character we know as Johnny Football. At some point, the pressure is going to become too much, and even if Manziel has looked flawed in practice, and Hoyer is playing decently, the rook is going to be thrust into the spotlight, just how he likes it and just how many fans and media members want it. Still, the fantasy value of either QB probably isn't going to get past the mediocre-QB2 range. I am more inclined to draft Manziel because of his running ability in the Browns' run-heavy offense.
Steelers want to use rookie WR Martavis Bryant in red zone Posted: 12 Jul 2014 10:18 PM PDT The Steelers are attempting to fill the voids left behind by Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery with the likes of Lance Moore and Markus Wheaton. It may work, but those players are vertically challenged; Wheaton is the taller of the two at 5-foot-11. That's where fourth-round rookie Martavis Bryant comes in. The team wants to put all of his 6 feet and 4 inches to work often where it really counts this season. quot; He's a big guy, different from what we've had, as far as his length," Wide receivers coach Richard Mann said of Bryant to the Steelers' official website. "We feel like we can utilize his talents in the red zone. He has a big reach. "He has good speed. So we can use him in various ways, as far as cleaning things out. He's also a deep threat. He does have the speed." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Bryant is not a lumbering giant. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds at the NFL Combine. He can definitely get down the field and has great overall athleticism. He may score a handful of times this season, but it's unlikely he'll have consistent fantasy value acting as the No. 4 WR. However, given the age and mediocrity that exist in this group of receivers behind Antonio Brown and Wheaton, Bryant could have a much larger role sooner than later.
Camping World RV Sales 301 Practice Recap: Sleeper Drivers to Watch Posted: 12 Jul 2014 07:43 PM PDT
49ers TE Vernon Davis may hold out on training camp Posted: 12 Jul 2014 06:56 PM PDT Mike Florio over at PFT is reporting that 'sources' familiar with Vernon Davis say he's considering holding out on training camp until he receives a new contract. Davis already refused to attend OTA's with the 49ers in June. Davis signed a 6-year, $42 million dollar contract with $23 million guaranteed in 2010. He's scheduled to become a free agent in 2016. FANTASY ANALYSIS: By 2016 he'll be 32 years old. There isn't that big of a market for older tight ends seeking contract extensions. For fantasy purposes, in 2013 he put up a 52/850/13 line finishing as a TE5 in PPR formats. He still has plenty of play-making ability and can be considered a low-end TE1 prospect when he plays this year. If he doesn't, backup Vance McDonald is a name to watch for.
Head coach impressed with Steelers second-year RB Bell Posted: 12 Jul 2014 04:11 PM PDT Head Coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers has been more than impressed with second year running back Le'Veon Bell. quot;Le'Veon has had a great offseason," Tomlin said. "He's really shown that he is excited about taking the next step, particularly from a conditioning standpoint." Coming off a rookie season which saw him play in 13 games, rushing for 860 yards and catching 45 balls for an additional 399 yards, while tacking on eight touchdowns, Bell is primed to be a top flight back in year two. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The Steelers signed LeGarrette Blount in the offseason. Despite his back-to-back games of a combined 355 yards and six touchdowns in Week 17 and the first weekend of the playoffs last season, Blount is strictly a backup in Pittsburgh. The show is Bell's to steal and it appears fantasy junkies who've already starting drafting are buying in. His ADP of 18.00 shows him to be a solid 2nd round pick, at the latest!! In a recent FFWC Draft-n-Go I participated in, Bell was the sixth back off the board, going seventh overall. After the top three (LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, and Matt Forte-in any order), Bell enters the conversation as the next best RB, along with the likes of Adrian Peterson, Eddie Lacy, Giovanni Bernard and a few others. If you're drafting anywhere from No. 4 to No. 12 in your upcoming drafts and you get Bell as your RB1, you're in good shape. We have him projected for 277 points this year... solid production by anyones' standards.
