Finding Previous Revisions and Versions Of Files

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 12:01 PM PDT

Hey,

Time Machine is a wonderful bit of kit. It allows you to go back in time and retrieve those files. There is an extension of time machine on your Mac that allows you to go back in time with a single file. This is an excellent way to browse previous versions of files. As long as you have Time Machine setup a local copy of each file change will be stored by your Mac. This means you can browse previous versions of the file.

Browsing Previous Versions Of Files

This tip works with most native Mac apps. I have used TextEdit for this example, however it will work with Pages, Numbers etc.

To browse previous versions of a file hover by the name within the title bar of the window. You notice a small arrow appears, allowing you to access a drop down menu. When you click the name there is an option called “Browse All Versions”, selecting this will open a mini Time Machine window for that document.

The browse all versions allows you to see previous versions of the document.

The full screen window that appears is similar to any Time Machine window. You can browser through previous versions of the file, finding the one you want.

Time Machine opens up for the file you are viewing.

One of the interesting points about this little Time Machine window is that the document on the left is editable. This means you can copy and paste items from the right hand side into the live document. You can also it to view previous versions and copy what it written.

If you have found a document you want to restore, you can either press the big restore button or manually make the change if the edit is small.

If have only used it once or twice, but it has saved my bacon many times.
