The Dyson DC24 Vacuum Cleaner

By Ray Hauser

James Dyson founded the Dyson Company in 1993. The British company primarily makes vacuum cleaners. Dyson developed the innovative, cyclonic vacuum cleaner which doesn't need catch bags. Dust and dirt are sucked up and dumped into a clear, detachable bin. This bin is removed and emptied by pressing a button. It snaps easily back into place.

The DC24 is one of the best vacuum cleaners available on the market. This economical and compact machine is available in two models, the all floor/multi floor version and the Animal version which is particularly beneficial for people with pets.

The DC24 costs $300 to $400 and incorporates Dyson's "Root Cyclone" and "steering ball" technologies. Standard vacuum cleaners primarily draw debris laden air through small holes and deposit dirt into catch bags. These holes eventually get clogged and disrupt the machine's suction power.

The cutting-edge root cyclone system uses cyclonic separation to completely do away with this problem. Air rushes into the cyclone chamber where it spins at high speed. Dirt and dust are thrown out of the air and captured by a plastic catch bin. Catch bags aren't needed and there is no loss of suction or cleaning ability regardless of how much the machine is used. The unit has a power of 115 air watts.

The steering ball is the other major innovation incorporated into the DC24. Most regular vacuum cleaners have fixed wheels that make it easy to push or pull the machine in a straight line, but it's cumbersome to navigate in tight spots or around obstacles like furniture.

The Dyson DC24 eliminates steering issues by using a ball which rotates around itself. This extraordinary feature allows the DC24 to vacuum and clean places that are nearly impossible to reach with a regular vacuum cleaner. The ball also houses the machine's electric motor. This design feature lowers the vacuum cleaner's center of gravity adding to the DC24's versatile maneuverability.

A brush bar with resilient, nylon bristles spins up to ninety times per second which enables the DC24 to uproot even the most stubborn dirt. The brush bar can be shut off, so that the unit may be used safely on hard floors and fragile carpets.

The DC24 has a high efficiency air filter (HEPA) to screen out tiny particles of dust and allergens including mold spores and pollen. This vacuum is so effective at removing allergens it has been certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The filter can be removed and washed when it gets dirty.

A reversible wand is included with the DC24 for cleaning hard to reach places like stairs and ceiling corners. Other attachments come with the machine making it possible to clean almost anything. The DC24 Animal version comes with a special attachment, the mini turbine head tool for cleaning pet hair from tough to reach spots like furniture.

Dust and dirt is dumped into a clear catch bin which can be easily removed and emptied. After emptying, the catch bin snaps back into position and the DC24 is ready to use again. The lack of replaceable catch bags adds up to big savings over time.

The DC24 only weighs 11.65 pounds and it has a collapsible handle for quick and convenient storage in the tightest of spots. This vacuum cleaner was put through a series of demanding quality tests and is so well designed that Dyson offers a five year warranty on all parts and labor. (The DC24 will eventually be replaced by the new DC50.)
