Password Protect Any File As A PDF Posted: 01 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT Hey, Privacy and protection are important. Today’s post is going to discuss how to password protect PDF’s within Preview. We are also going to go a step further, how do we password protect any file such as a document, or presentation. We are going to use the PDF functionality within Preview and your Mac to put a password on your documents so they are secure. This is a great way to ensure if your PDF’s get into the wrong hands they can’t be opened. Password Protecting PDF’sIf you already have a PDF and want to protect it with a PDF we can do this within Preview. Open it within the app. Go to the File > Save (File > Save As also works). The dialog box will opening asking your to give it a name, you can use the current name if applicable. From the dialog box there will be an option saying “Encrypt”. Click the check box and enter a password, twice. When you press the save button the file will be appended with a password which is now required to open it. Password Protecting Any DocumentIf you want to add a password to another document, such as a Word document, we can. The process is to save it out as PDF and then apply a password. To do this, open you document and go to the Print menu. Within this option there will be a button, at the bottom titled “PDF”. Press this button and select the “Save As PDF” option. A dialog box will appear asking you to give it some details such as where to save it. There will be an option at the bottom of the window called “Security Options”. When you press this button you can add a password to the file. This will save the file as PDF and add a password. It is a little clunky to save a file as PDF, however it is a way that works and will work on any Mac or PC. Want to catch up on the latest Tweets about this site, follow me on Twitter.
