Clean Up Images And Save Space By Removing Exif Data Posted: 29 Jul 2013 11:30 AM PDT Hey, Every modern camera takes great photos. When they take an image they append a lot of data such as when the image was taken, what ISO setting was used, some even place GPS coordinates. They extra data takes up space. It also gives a lot of information to other users about your camera. You may not want to ship all of this data to other users and people when you send them an image. This is particular important if you want to remove where you took the image for privacy reasons. There is a simple tool to remove EXIF data, and clean up images. Remove EXIF DataTo view the exif data for any image open it in Preview and use Tools > Show Inspector. The information panel that opens gives you a long list with every bit of information you camera used to take to the image. This data takes up space, so we are going to remove it. To remove EXIF data download a tool called ImageOptim. Download and install this handy app. Open the app and drag your images into the panel. You can also use the plus symbol in the bottom right hand corner to add images to the app. When images are added it will run through the file and remove this data. This will save about 3-5% per image. Depending on the size of the image and how much data was stored with the image this percentage can be a lot more. If you use the inspector in Preview again, you will notice there is a lot less information. This is information now, cannot, be used by other people. I don’t recommend you do this for every image. However, it can be useful on one or two. Especially if you are going to send it too someone and don’t want all of that data going with it.
