Make Island Candles Last Longer

By Marjorie Vargas

Imagine the sweet aroma of coconut, gardenia, jasmine or passion fruit lofting gently through the room. Aromatherapy is the process by which a scent can trigger something in the brain and influence one's mood, promote relaxation and even spark pleasant memories. The influence of a pleasant fragrance can last longer simply by following a few simple tips to maintain Island candles.

The first thing everyone should know about getting the most out of their candle is that the wick needs to be properly maintained. It should be trimmed down to no more than 1/4" before it is lit each and every time. The reason for this is that when it is left long, the wax and flame meet up and results in excessive smoke.

The majority of consumers do not know that the product burns more effectively if the wick is straightened and centered before it is set aflame. Allowing it to curve over to one side causes that part to melt faster than the rest, creating an overflow of wax and a shortened burn. The process is as easy as using something like a toothpick to push it to the middle and stand it up after the flame is out but while the pool is still pliable.

Another thing one should do is to avoid allowing drafts to come in contact with the flame. When the fire is blown over, it tends to melt one side of the candle more than the others which shortens the life of the product. This may be prevented by placing it in a hurricane glass or, if that is not an option, be sure to turn it ever so often so that the burn is more even.

Foreign matter can become trapped in the softened wax and interfere with the purity of the fragrance and the clarity of the flame. The smell of burning moths, discarded match heads and bits of dirt does nothing to enhance the beautiful aroma infused into the candle. Those items are also possible causes for unwanted smoke or unintended flare ups.

Snuffing out the flame is better than blowing it simply as a means of prevention. Candles continue to smolder for a time after being extinguished and this often results in soot that settles on the walls and furniture. To avoid that and possible reigniting, use either a brass snuffer smother the fire or use wet fingers to pinch the wick.

While it has nothing to do with making the product last longer or maintaining a purer aroma, a candle should always be placed in a non flammable holder. They are a layer of protection for the surface beneath and a catch all for any overflow of wax. The fragrance oils and dyes in the wax could seep into counter tops or furniture and leave unsightly stains.

Making these simple steps part of the regular routine can extend the life of Island candles and keep the fragrance fresher for a longer time. Using common sense when burning these products will prevent a lot of potential hazards and protect furniture. Fill any room with pleasing scents that relax the mind and promote happy feelings.
