Add Open With TextEdit (or any other app) To Right Click Menu Item

Posted: 02 May 2013 11:38 AM PDT

Hey,

Every time you right click on a file you are presented with an open and open with menu. The open with menu gives you many options to open the file in other applications. Most of the time this suffices. Today’s trick is going to show you how to open any file with TextEdit or any application you choose. Although this trick doesn’t give this option within the Open With menu option when you right click, the option is instead under the service option. It is just as accessible and just as quick.

If you find yourself opening files with random file extensions, or files that are actually text files in a disguise, you may want to open them within TextEdit. It is a powerful application which allows you to get to the guts of files quickly and easily. Although you can use the Open With > Other option, and then select TextEdit. Of you can add the association to always open with TextEdit, it is sometimes easier just to have the option. This allows you to open the odd file, reliably, within TextEdit.

Create The Service

I have previously posted on services you can’t live without. This trick builds upon that. We are going to build a service that takes the file you want and open it within TextEdit. It is really simple to build.

Open Automator and select the Service option when presented. This will allow you to build a service automatically and apply the various inbuilt rules.

Create a new service within Automator.

Create a new service within Automator.

Alter the options at the top of the workflow so the service receives selected ‘files or folders’ in ‘any application’. This will setup the service to take the file you select.

Drag the ‘Open Finder Items’ workflow into the workflow section of automator. Pick the application you want from the list. I have select TextEdit, but this can be any application you want.

The workflow is very simple. But does what we want.

Save the workflow with a useful name. Automator will automatically save the service in the correct location and add the service to your right click menu item.

Now when you right click on any file you are given an option to open the file within TextEdit. You can make the service as many time as you want for very application you want. This option will appear every time you right click on a file.

Open with TextEdit is now present every time you right click on a file.

It is a very simple workflow. However, it does work. It saves time hunting for the TextEdit within the open with menu option.
