Environmental Friendly Parking Lot Lighting

By Chris Hadley

There are very few people still living who remember when there was no parking lot lighting. As civilization has advanced today this can be found everywhere there are official public lots. This provides safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

There are elaborately installed fixtures in parking lots and just plain ones. The elaborate ones can usually be found at impressive buildings, such as corporate headquarters, where appearance is important to prospective customers. The plain ones can be found at places such as warehouses and factories.

There are certain laws mandated by cities requiring that lot must have evenly placed 3-4 foot candles throughout the lot. Over time, these lamps can deteriorate and allow shadow spots to appear. When this happens, it causes a visual distortion for drivers as well as encouraging hiding places for vandals.

Something else that is in effect in most cities is called the 'dark sky laws'. This requires that the light fittings (luminaires) be of a certain design. These fittings control the area of light and keep it from hitting the street or nearby buildings. It also provides less glare than the old type fittings did.

The United States has the reputation of producing the best fixtures of this type in the world. U. S. Brands are in high demand because of a number of reasons. The manufacturer provides full warranty on all brands and they are especially designed to meet the requirements of modern maintenance, replacement, and standards.

Currently becoming more popular are solar powered street and parking lot lighting. Although commercial solar illumination has been manufactured since 1994, it was not until 1999 that 12 of these systems were installed at the Anaheim Hills Golf Club, in California. In 2001, one was installed at Baltimore, MD's Fort McHenry. It has been found that they are excellent for reduced energy consumption, resulting in cost savings, and fit in very well with the country's environmental concerns.
