Things To Realize When Searching For A Contractors License School

By Bertha Wells

California is a great state to live in. Even with the declining economy there are still many opportunities for licensed trades to do work there. However as the name implies you must be licensed. One of the best ways to prepare for this is to take a look at a contractors license school to start you on your way. Knowledge is power so these are the things you need to know when looking at them.

Not just everyone is eligible for taking the state contractors license test. There are certain requirements you must pass. You need to show your four years of experience in the building trades you will be testing in. This building experience needs to be in the last ten years. You could substitute three of the four years of building experience for college or a trade school. You also must send signed letter for the state testing board which will certify your college credits and experience.

Counting specialty classifications there are about 45 different classes to test for. You may test for any of the trade tests at any time. You may also hold a licenses for all the trades you can pass. You should realize that you are required to renew each license every third year for each trade. You are also required to be bonded for them.

A class B or general building license is one of the most common. This is more commonly known as a general contractors license. While they can hire and contract other trades to do any work, they as a rule do not do any work themselves. They are more of the overseers that guide all the other trades and make sure everything goes smoothly.

Some of the more typical specialty trades are the C-10 electrical and the C-36 plumbing. By law these trades are the only people which can contract for this type of work. They can also work on newer buildings or on remolding older buildings to bring them up to code. In Construction they are the only people that can sign contracts for this type of work.

When you first apply for a test, you are commonalty given a four to six week lead time for when you will take the test. This usually provides you extra time to practice for the actual test. Each test will generally have two separate parts, the trade test and the law test. You can retake a failed test three times before you must reapply.

Each test contains multiple choice questions with 4 answers though only one answer being correct. You usually are not allowed to bring things in the testing area to help you. All tests are completed on different computers which greatly simplifies things. The law test has around 115 questions and typically trade tests will average around 100 and 120 questions.

A good contractors license school will generally offer some kind of guarantee for their students. Most real good schools will even pay the 60 dollar re-exam fee for those people that fail to pass it the first time. The bottom line is if you are serious about pursuing this line of work, anything that helps you pass the test for your new line of work is a very good idea.
