| Protect Your Time Machine Backups By Encrypting Them Posted: 24 Apr 2013 11:04 AM PDT Hey, Security is very important on your Mac. Your data is also very important and you don’t want it falling into the wrong hands. By encrypting your data you can ensure that it is more difficult to get the actual files. You can encrypt your Mac’s hard drive, why not apply the same rules to your Time Machine backup drive. It is a very simple process to implement and gives you that piece of mind to ensure that your data is safe. Encrypting Time Machine BackupsEncrypting Time Machine backups is very simple this method applies if you have a new drive to backup or an existing drive. This only applies to directly attached hard drives and will not work if you have Time Machine backing up over a wireless connection. To encrypt your backup drive open System Preferences. Select the Time Machine preference pane. Within the settings select the ‘Select Disk’ option. If you are using an external hard drive, ensure it is connected and switch on. From the ‘Select Data’ option, select the drive you are using for a backup. At the bottom of the selection list you will notice there is a check boxed titled ‘encryption’. Select this option and press OK. This will then encryption your data, depending on the size of the backup this may take a while.  Encrypting your backups is easy with a check box option.
