Working Hard For A Job With Your Web Design Degree

By Rae T. Schneider

After you get a web design degree, it'll be time to search for a job using your degree as experience. Getting your start in this field can be a little scary, but with some preparation and research you'll quickly find your footing. You'll see plenty of options are available for the job hunt and plenty of places or you can start finding work today.

Is important to start creating a portfolio of samples to present to potential employers while you're still in school for a web design degree. Many employers will prefer that their applicants have some previous experience in web design and development before employing them for a new job or project. See if you can't get some pro bono or low-cost work from friends, family members, or local companies to add to your portfolio. Many people want to go online but haven't done so yet because their budget is too small for project. These businesses would be willing to hire a student at a much lower cost than a professional to design and develop their website.

Develop your own website before you get out of school. Designers who haven't created a business site for their work are like printers who don't buy ink for their home printer. Potential clients and customers can see the skills you have on display on that business site. A personal website doesn't need to be involved or expensive, just include an about you section showing your credits and degree, a way to contact you, and a sample of your online portfolio.

Before you graduate, you should also start looking for work to add experience to that web design degree. As a digital designer, you have the option of working from home or designing for a business. Consider both options carefully to determine what option is best for you, or sample work in both areas. Lots of designers choose to work for a company, but also decide to work freelance part-time. Begin creating your profiles on job hiring websites, such as Monster and iFreelance.com. You may also want to start submitting bids to web design projects on freelance boards, such as eLance.com.

Remember to develop a portfolio of your designs and also create your own website. You can start finding work with a regular company or as a freelancer before graduation using online websites. Getting the jump on your career before you get your web design degree doesn't have to be a stressful prospect. Make a little progress on your goals every day, and you will be more than ready to work after graduation.
