Take Advantage Of Reusable Produce Bags

By Lakisha Barton

For years now, people have been debating the truth of global warming. Some insist it's only hype, meant to frighten businesses into changing their behaviors. Others are convinced that it's a genuine threat to the planet, and that the children of the future might suffer. Then there are those who think it's better to be safe than sorry, and they try to recycle and drive hybrid cars just in case. Anyone who is trying to do his or her part to take care of the planet can make a small effort, and one option is to use reusable produce bags.

Plastic bags are used for groceries and for fruits and vegetables, as well. The amount used is amazing, even if you don't go by official statistics. All you need to do is count the number of bags you have after a weekly shopping trip, and then multiply that by a week, and then a year. Just your family is probably using hundreds.

When the groceries are being bagged for you to take home, you might already request paper instead of plastic. However, not every store offers that option. Besides, there is often a question about using trees to make paper bags. Therefore, some have chosen to bring their own sacks, made from canvas or cloth. Unfortunately, those are too heavy for produce, and so different designs are used.

A net design is popular because the fruits and vegetables can be easily seen by the cashier. That way, he or she simply sets it on the scale, and knows which code to punch into the cash register. Another benefit of netting is that it is lighter, and of course you would not want to pay for extra weight.

Another lightweight material is gauze because like nets, it's easy to see through. Manufacturers make sure it's strong enough to last. It comes with a drawstring, as do the styles that are made of netting or other fabrics.

One of the best things about a reusable product is its durability, and some might prefer cotton or even canvas. That still weighs a bit more, but the food can be dumped out for weighing. The market won't mind because they're saving money. Some even have a scale in the aisle that will print out the code for the cashier, and you can stick it on the bag.

Stronger materials are fun because their colors vary and images can be painted or printed on the outside. Choose a playful pattern, or find one that has your favorite vegetable or fruit illustrated. You might even find a seller who will put your name on it, or your favorite quote.

Reusable produce bags are great for the environment, whether or not you're actually saving the whole world. They're also stylish and affordable. They can be used for more than shopping, too, for example fill one with nuts and bring it on a picnic. Whatever the reason you choose to use this product, you'll be happy that you have made the decision.
