Using Website Templates To Build Your Site Fast

By Jemser Reik Bary

In the past, if you needed a web site built you had two options, hire a designer or create and build it yourself. Both options were (and still are) expensive and time consuming. With more recent technology, you can instead easily install a content management system (CMS) with all the features and facilities built in. How then can you ensure your site stands out from your competitors? By making it unique in look with a nice theme.

A website template is basically a design for a website that you can either just add your content to and upload to your web host, or simply plug into your CMS in a few minutes and customise with various options and settings such as background, colours and social network plugins.

Generally speaking, website templates are relatively cheap, especially compared with the cost of hiring a designer. So you can get a nice looking website while saving yourself quite a sum. However, you should exercise caution in choosing your design and its features.

There are issues you should consider if you want to optimise your sites design. Since it is likely you prefer your website to be as unique as possible, try to avoid using any template that is common or popular.

Most visitors who land on your site will have been delivered by search engines based on your great content. While an unattractive website may lose you traffic, an attractive one cannot bring visitors. So, spend less time customising your web template and more on building great content for your site. Your template is meant to save you time.

Be very careful in choosing your template. Don't assume that you will be able to make changes, rather spend the time to read all the details before you purchase. You will not be able to get a refund based on the fact that you thought it was suitable - especially if it works the way the designer said it would. You need to be absolutely sure that it has been designed to work the way you want. You should check support forums and FAQ's for the template or email the designer before you buy.

If you can, choose a design that offers extra benefits to your visitors. Some templates include utilities and facilities that match particular niches, for example sports website templates.

Ensure that the website template you get fits the base you have installed e.g. a website template built for one CMS will not work on another. Though the designs may look alike they are actually very different.

To summarise:

Applying a template to your website is an excellent way for you to save time, money and effort on your web portal. This however is only true if you ensure you take care to get yourself a template that is appropriate for your customers, framework and industry. While the appearance of your site is important, it is more important that you spend your time building good content for your site since this is what will bring your visitors back for more information.
