Customise The Login Screen In Mountain Lion With System Information

Hey,

I have a quick tip that I would like to share with you. IN Mountain Lion the login screen significantly changed. One of these was the location of extra bits of information that would be displayed on your login screen. Useful stuff such as the hostname and the IP address. Items of information you can quickly access without needing to log on. Today’s post is going to show you how to do this in Moutnaion Lion. Its a quick Terminal command that takes a couple of seconds to do.

To run this command open Terminal located in Applications > Utilities. Within the window copy and paste the following.

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow AdminHostInfo HostName

Now, when you go to the log in screen and click on the time in the upper left corner it will display your computers host name, the IP address among other bits of information. Its a funny place to put the clicks on the clock, but the designers thought this was the best place to put it.

If you want to get rid of this change, open Terminal again and type the following:

sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow AdminHostInfo

This command will remove the change from your system.

Its only a small command, but something I think adds that little bit of functionality to your Mac’s login screen. This command is especially useful for people in an office environment who may want the IP address and don’t want to log in.
