A Holiday Favorite: Skeleton Halloween Costumes

By Alex Liam

No holiday celebration is complete without skeleton Halloween costumes. There have been many variations on this classic. Some go the extra mile with an elaborate full body suit, while others may keep it minimal with corpse face paint. Whether you're going for a full costume or just something to feel festive, skeleton Halloween costumes offer variations on either end of the spectrum.

Making your own skeleton costume can be complicated if you try to be realistic. Cutting "bones" from pliable plastic and mounting it on a simple dark bodysuit may sound easier than it is. Another option is painting your dark plain costumer with paint that glows in the dark. To get your bones in the right place and find the correct dimensions look in your encyclopedia or print an image of a skeleton found online. You can use graph paper to enlarge the bones and simply the process.

How you design your own is entirely up to you. If you're creative, you can paint on your own design, using a pair of black sweat pants and a matching sweatshirt, or whatever other clothing you plan to wear. This may prove more time consuming.

You may choose to paint your face and use shadows for the skeletal impression or buy a mask to wear. From simple face masks to full head coverings that give you a realistic skull in appearance you can get as elaborate as you choose.

If you are short on time you could use your own clothes and a few easily purchased accessories to give the impression of a skeleton Halloween costume. From earrings and other jewelry to gloves printed with bone images, these props are widely available and inexpensive as Halloween approaches each year. Jewelry of plastic bones combined with a dark outfit and a good mask is a quick and simple way to become a virtual bag of bones.

You can combine the skeleton with another character if you like or add a smaller skeleton to accompany your character. Choose a skeletal fish carried by a pirate, a skeletal cat on the shoulder of a witch, or carry a bag of bones as a zombie.

Aborigines could use a fake bone through their nose or ear lobes, a Zulu warrior might enjoy a necklace of plastic finger bones. Witch doctors might need a whole bag of bones for their spells. How much more effect would your mummy costume be if the tattered cloth revealed a bone sticking out here or there? Perhaps no Halloween prop is as useful as the simple fake bone.

It may be wise to take the commercial route and purchase skeleton Halloween costumes. The range of prices and realism provide many choices. Adding some bone jewelry and accessories to a purchased costume can add enough detail to make your boney skeleton unique. Choosing this option saves the time and tricky details associated with skeleton Halloween costumes made from scratch. Edited by Svetchey Sanorols
