The Immortals of Meluha - A Book Review

By Hitesh Sharma

The Immortals of Meluha is a fiction book written by an Indian author called Amish Tripathi. The story and the plot are set in 1900 BC in the imaginary land of Meluha, a reference to the Indus Valley Civilization that existed around that time. With a spell-binding plot and the blending of history and mythology, Amish has managed to create one of the best-selling books ever written by an Indian author.

Meluha is a land that is prosperous, rich in culture and at ease with it self and with society - the land of the mighty Suryvanshis. Set where now modern Punjab stands, the land of Meluha is a perfect society and is one that is based on the teachings of Lord Rama.

However, there is a certain period of strife ongoing in Meluha due to the fact that they are on the verge of war with their enemies, the clan of the Suryavanshis who are situated in the East. These two societies cannot live together due to their different approaches to life. What is even further troubling to the Meluhan people is that their enemies have joined hands with the terrorist warrior tribe of the Nagas who now regularly raid the cities of Meluha.

It is at this point in the Immortals of Meluha, that we are introduced to Shiva's character, a nomad warrior who has taken up refuge in the land of Meluha. However, Shiva does not know that he the destined one, the one who will bring peace to the people in this land while vanquishing evil. And so the story progresses as to how Shiva tries to live up to his destiny while at the same time battling the various doubts and his haunting past.

The book tries to recreate the feeling of "The Lord of the Rings" and takes us back in time. It is really creative as to how the author mixes both history and mythology together to create a riveting piece of work. Due to the countless references to the Hindu gods, ancient Indian History and the concept of good versus bad that Indians are brought up on, this book is sure to create a cult following of its own.

Amish gives us a fresh look at Indian history with the Immortals of Meluha and there is lots more with the two sequels to follow. With creative marketing to aid the launch, the book has an amazing cover page to lure book browsers. A must read book, The Immortals of Meluha, is one for all ages and especially for Indian book lovers.
