The Nuts and Bolts Of Nail Polish: A Rundown For New Salon Owners

By Rosalinda R. Rees

There's a lot to think about if you're planning on opening a new nail polish salon. There is the basic stuff, of course, such as location, equipment, mission statement, etc. And the decision-making doesn't stop there: how you stock your salon and what services you offer are equally important considerations. The success of your business depends on what you provide and how well you do it. We all know marketing only goes so far!

So here is a brief list of three things you need to offer at your salon. These are the products and procedures your customers CAN'T get at home; these are what are going to make them flock to your door.

Metallics - Some people may still consider purple nail polish to be wild and crazy. However sometimes your clients are going to want to take color a step further - and that's when you'll need to whip out the metallic stuff. It is available in every color you can imagine and is perfect for celebratory occasions.

Decals - As a manicurist, you should be able to paint a number of small, intricate designs. But every so often, you'll receive a request for a design that's really challenging to create from scratch. These are the occasions to get out the decals. Stock your salon with a broad range of decals - flowers, stars, shapes, hearts, animals. Make sure you have a variety of jewel decals on hand. Many customers are going to ask for a little bling-bling in their paint job.

Gel (shellac) nail polish - Gel, or "shellac," is perhaps the hottest trend in the nail world today. The reasons are simple: gel nail polish is thicker, stronger, and longer lasting than traditional acrylic nail polish. It's one of the best things to include on your beauty menu, as it's something most customers really can't get at home. Applying gels requires time and the aid of a UV lamp. It's a good plan to get trained in gel application before you open your salon. Also make sure you keep only top-of-the-line polish in your store.
