Data On New York Criminal Records

New York is one of the states that have implemented the Freedom of Information Act which was approved in the year 1968. This law has mandated the local government to make all personal documents open to the public which includes criminal records. New York Criminal records are archived by the office of the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

New York Criminal records are accessed primarily to conduct a background check on a certain individual. Many would check out the criminal history of the people who are working for them especially if it involves taking care of their loved ones such as tutors, caretakers, nannies, neighbors, friends and even relatives. Criminal files are also used by authorities to aid them in their investigation. It can even play a big role in the investigation process as it can be the evidence that can solve the mystery of the crime.

One can find a lot of information on a criminal record in New York. It contains the basic information about the individual involved in the crime such as the name and the date of birth. Details about the conviction of the individual can be found such as the arrest information, sentence given, dispositions and misdemeanors. A physical description of the individual can also be found along with anybody markings such as scars and tattoos. It also indicates the names of the people which were involved in the incident.

The state of New York allows only selected people to access a certain record. One can request for their own criminal records. Authorized persons such as law enforcement agencies can also request for a criminal record of a certain individual. The requesting individual has to provide two valid identification forms such as any government issued ID. One has to pay $61.50 to process the request. The request can be done through a mail or phone order. The process may take several days to complete.

The office of the Criminal Information Unit of the Department of Criminal Justice Services houses the New York criminal records. It is also where the fingerprint records of the individual are archived. The state police department is another place to obtain the document. The Internet is now the newest medium in order to know about the criminal history of a certain individual.

The retrieval of the criminal record using the Internet proves to be a lot faster and convenient for most of the residents. One can do a free criminal records search but the results may not be helpful and useful than that of a paid search. The result of a paid search is more accurate thus it can be used right away even in court proceedings.
