Motivating Your Employees

By Lindsay Barnes

Even if they're not 100 percent happy with what they're doing, people will still do their jobs. That's not something you want to see in people, though. You want to see real enthusiasm and passion for their jobs, and you want them to do their best. It should not be enough to just do the work they need to do and stop at that. People must be inspired to achieve good things and complete projects on a high note. You want to make sure that you are motivating them to do so.

But what should you be doing in order to motivate employees? One thing you can do is to do more than just give them directions for what you want them to do. Sure you have to tell them what you want them to do and what results you expect. But you have to do something else to get them pumped up to work. Money is also believed to be a great motivator, but its effects are temporary. What you really need to do is to get to know your employees, get an understanding of their skills and overall career goals, and to simply know their personality. When you know their values and priorities, you can easily find out how you can motivate them. A simple to-do list won't get them revved up to start working.

One way to keep employees motivated is by providing them with feedback on what they do. This helps employees feel that their work is being seriously considered and that you are taking notice. When you let them know what it is they did properly and how it helped a project or the company itself, it tends to make people feel better about what they do, and be pushed to do the same in the future.

Remember that improving the environment in which people work also affects how people do their jobs. You can provide them with some facilities for fun and relaxation to help them take a break from work from time to time. Alternatively, you can also become the sort of company that allows people to live a more balanced life. Employees who work for a company that offers such things tend to view the company more positively, since it signals that the company also prioritizes the welfare of people.

Being given tasks that are new or even challenging can also motivate the right person. This helps people exercise their skills and creativity, plus it also says to them that you trust them to do something new. After all, motivation goes far beyond cheering people on and giving them pep talks. It also has to do with how you treat them at work and how much faith you have in their skills.
