Create Your Own iPhone Ring Tones In Mavericks

This post is based on a couple of questions and problems people have emailed in about creating ring tones within iTunes. If you have a new iPhone, you would like a custom ring tone. This post will explain how to do this within iTunes and Mac OS X Mavericks. Mavericks and iTunes have recently been updated, which means you have to slightly change how you create ring tones. One of the steps, in many posts published online, is done automatically in previous versions. This post is simple to follow and once you do it once, it takes no time at all to repeat.

Step 1: Find the iTunes Track

I am going to assume that you want an iTunes track as your ring tone. If you don’t have the mp3 or similar in iTunes add it to your library.

Step 2: Cut It Down To 30 Secs

Your iPhone will only allow a 30 second ring tone. To ensure we stay within these guidelines right click on the track you want as your ring tone and select Get Info. From the options tab change the start and finish point to the section of the music track you want. Ensure that it is less than or equal to thirty seconds in length.

Shorten the track to 30 seconds.

Step 3: Format

Now we need to convert it to a format that your iPhone understands. Right click on the track again and select “Create AAC Version”. This will convert the track from the format you are in to the one your iPhone wants.

Convert your mp3 into an aac and iPhone compatible version.

You will now have an mp3 and an aac version. At this point revert back the original track to its normal length.

Step 4: Convert To Ring Tone

This step is a lot simpler than it sounds. Right click not the file once again and select “Show In Finder”. Change the file format from .m4a to .m4r. Change the file name as you would normally. If you don’t see the file extension, right click on the file and select Get Info. You will be able to change the file extension from there.

Convert the file to m4r.

Step 5: Add Back Into iTunes.

To ensure your iTunes library recognises the file we need to add it back in. Delete the original file within your iTunes library. When the warning comes up ensure that you keep the file.

Delete the file from iTunes. Ensure you keep the file.

Now go to File > Add To Library and add the file back to your library. You will have to find it, however if you still have the Finder window open you can drag the file from the Finder window into the iTunes open file dialogue box.

Step 6: Check It’s Worked

To check that it has worked. Select the tones option from the sidebar or the drop down option. You will now see your ring tones file that you have just created.
